The namesake for Knoles Hall, one of the oldest buildings on campus, Tully Cleon Knoles served as president of the College (now University) of the Pacific from 1919 to 1946, and later as Chancellor from 1946 to 1959.

Knoles became president in 1919 after serving as a professor of history from the University of Southern California. He oversaw a mass quantity of changes upon his arrival, including the reassessment of academic standards and the selection of a new location.

Five years later, Knoles' vision came to fruition when the College of the Pacific was moved from San Jose to its current location in Stockton. Upon the location change, the faculty he brought with him represent 17 of the College's 18 departments. At the time, the College also housed a Conservatory and departments of education and engineering.

In addition to Knoles Hall, Knoles is also the namesake for Tully C. Knoles School, a Pre-K through eighth grade school in Stockton.
