One of the most versatile and decorated running backs in Pacific history, Dick Bass played for Tigers from 1956-59, spreading his name all over the school record books before being selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the first round in 1959.Â
Bass is one of the top career rushers in Tiger history. In his three years at Pacific, the 1958 All-American amassed 2,714 rushing yards (fourth all-time), 31 rushing touchdowns (second all-time) and 3,077 yards of total offense (eight all-time).Â
In 1958 alone, Bass rushed for 1,361 yards, scored 116 points and had 1,440 yards of total offense to become the NCAA's first triple crown winner since Whizzer White in 1937. In 1968, Bass become the first Los Angeles Ram to eclipse 5,000 career rushing yards after setting the franchise record just two years prior when he was named the Associated Press' Comeback Player of the Year, a second-team All Pro by the AP and team MVP.Â
Bass is currently tied with fellow Pacific Hall-of-Famer Tom McCormick ('52) with 17 rushing touchdowns in a season, and holds the single-season record with 116 points scored during the 1958 season that saw the Tigers go 6-4.Â
