Jack Toomay starred in both swimming and basketball for the College of the Pacific after serving in the United States Air Force during World War II. 

Toomay led COP to the 1946-47 California Collegiate Athletic Association title, where he was named a First Team All-CCAA and United Press All-Pacific Coast first team selection as the league's top scorer. He also captained the Tigers in the pool to the 1947 CCAA swim title. 

Nicknamed "Gigantic Jack" by the Stockton Record's Irving Sprague, Toomay stood 6'7" and 220 pounds as a dual-sport athlete for Pacific. 

Toomay graduated from the College of the Pacific in 1947 and played Center for the Basketball Association of America's Chicago Stags before playing for the NBA's Washington Capitols and Baltimore Bullets. Toomay also starred at center for the Denver Nuggets during the 1949-50 season. 

He continued to play basketball after being recalled to service for the Korean War, earning All-Far Eastern Air Force center honors and led the leadu in 1950-51 while being named to the All-Hawaiian Interservice Team in 1951-52 and 1952-53.
