Mike Merriweather came to Pacific over the prospects of playing professional baseball. Although he intended to play football for esteemed head coach Chester Caddas, Merriweather spent his final three seasons under Bob Toledo while earning All-Pacific Coast Athletic Association and All-American honors in 1981.

Merriweather played in three bowl games for Pacific from 1979 to 1981 before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 1982 NFL Draft.

He played in three consecutive Pro Bowls as a Steeler and was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 1988, where he made NFL history by becoming the first player to score a winning touchdown in overtime with a safety.
