Johnny Podesto starred on the Pacific football team in the early 1940s before his collegiate career was cut short when the Marine Corps came calling for World War II.Â
Podesto did it all for head coach Amos Alonzo Stagg in a time where most players appeared on both sides of the ball. An All-American in 1943 alongside Art McCaffrey, Podesto was a defensive back, punter, passer and tailback.Â
He was a triple thread at halfback, but also an excellent blocker and kicker.
Podesto helped the Tigers begin the 1943 season 5-0 with wins over Cal, UCLA and a 16-7 upset over Del Monte Pre-Flight.
