Schwartz earned All-America honors in both swimming and water polo in 1975. It came after he was distinguished as an All-American in swimming in 1974 in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and as a member of the 400 medley relay, and repeated as an All-American in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke in 1976. Schwartz placed third in the nation in the 200 backstroke in 1976 and top-five in 1974 and 1977. He went on to become a recipient of the first President's Student-Athlete of the Year Award on May 10, 1977. Schwartz held the school record in the 200 backstroke for 22 years until it was finally broken by a Tiger swimmer in 1999.
