Hugh McWilliams stood out at Pacific as both a student-athlete and a coach, spending his playing days on the gridiron for head coach Amos Alonzo Stagg from 1936 to 1939.Â
McWilliams was an All-Far Western center in 1938 and 1939 captained the '39 team that went 6-6-1 for a second-place finish in conference.
He won the Fred Busher Trophy in his senior year for most outstanding lineman and the "Jimmy Hatlo Award" as the most outstanding player in Pacific's 6-0 win over California in 1939.Â
McWilliams was an honorable mention All-Coast and All-American in 1938 and 1939. He also starred on the basketball floor at Pacific, leading the Tigers in scoring in 1938 and being named All-Far Western Conference in 1938 and 1939.
He returned to Pacific in 1946 as an assistant under Coach Stagg after four years in the Air Force, continuing as an assistant under Larry Siemering and Ernie Jorge from 1947 to 1953.Â
He also led Pacific's baseball team from 1946 to 1953, guiding the Tigers to the 1948 CCAA championship with a 17-7 overall record and 12-3 in conference play.Â
