Born and raised in Stockton, Grant Dunlap starred in baseball and basketball for Pacific with a brief gap for World War II service.

In 1941, he was a first string forward in basketball and lettered in track.

After the war, Dunlap captained Chris Kjeldsen's championship basketball team at forward as well as Hugh McWilliams' baseball team at shortstop.

A dual sport athlete even after his college days, Dunlap joined the Birmingham Skyhawks of the Professional Basketball League of America and led them to a 5-2 record in the 1947-48 season before moving to Mississippi and Oklahoma to pursue professional baseball.

Dunlap spent nine years altogether in the professional baseball ranks, concluding his career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1953 and Minnesota Twins in 1954. Dunlap registered a lifetime batting average of .315 as an outfielder, including a .356 batting clip as a pinch hitter for the Cardinals.
