One of the most renowned football minds of all time and the only Pacific alum to both coach in and win a Super Bowl, Tom Flores made an immediate impact on Tiger football in his four years from 1956 to 1959.Â
Flores set foot on campus in 1956, being named an Honorable Mention All-American quarterback his first two years with the Orange and Black while also ranking in the top 10 nationally in passing. He was selected to the methodist College All-American Team in 1957 and was the inaugural winner of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award for Outstanding Scholarship.Â
After playing in the East-West Shrine Game in 1958, Flores went on to captain Pacific's baseball team before coaching the frosh football team a year removed from graduation to a 5-1 record.
Flores enjoyed an illustrious nine-year professional career with the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs, appearing in the 1966 Pro Bowl with the Raiders.
Once retired from playing, Flores spent 20 years on the sidelines as a quarterbacks, receivers and head coach, highlighted by rings in Super Bowls XV and XVIII - both as head coach of the Raiders. At the time, Flores' two Super Bowl victories were the most of any coach other than Chuck Noll. He had an 83-53 regular-season record as head coach of the Raiders and an 8-3 record in five postseason appearances. He returned to the sideline in 1992 as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks for three seasons.Â
In 1988, he was inducted into the Fresno County Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2007, the California Sports Hall of Fame. In 2000, he was inducted into the Stockton Hall of Fame. Flores was named a recipient of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award of Honor in 2004. In 2021, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Â
