Regarded as one of the best water polo referees in the world, John Felix starred on Pacific's water polo team before graduating in 1959.

Felix was a student of Hall of Fame coach Bill Antilla in both water polo and swimming, later on becoming Antilla's assistant coach. Felix won UOP's Sprit of Galen Laack Trophy as a member of the 1959 graduating class, and was selected as one of three students to serve on the Academic Standards Committe a year later.

Felix earned his master's degree from UOP in 1961.

He went on to officiate water polo in three separate Olympic years, including the 1976 Gold Medal game between Hungary and Italy.
