Ted Leland was honored for both his athletic achievements at Pacific, as well as outstanding service as an administrator in college athletics.

Leland lettered twice in football (1968, 1969), as well as in track and wrestling, before earning a bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Pacific in 1970. He went on to earn his master's degree in Sports Psychology from Pacific in 1973. He was honored as a first team selection to the All-Pacific Coast Athletic Association for football. In 1969 he was awarded the Mrs. Helen Alexander Most Dedicated Booster award.

Leland went on to serve as an assistant football coach at East Tennessee State, Pacific and Stanford, earning his Ph.D. in Sports Psychology in 1982 from Stanford.

In 1983, Leland became the Athletic Director of Dartmouth College. While there, he established an Enrollment Office in the Athletic Department, improving the recruiting yield from 34 percent to 73 percent. He worked in conjunction with the College President and the development office to increase the annual fundraising by a phenomenal 300 percent, for which his efforts were rewarded with $17.5 million for athletic facilities. Leland was also responsible for improving the implemented strength and fitness programs for the athletes, faculty and community. He overtook the administration of the golf course and Skiway before the two facilities showed their highest participation levels in history.

Leland became Pacific's Director of Athletics in 1988, and served as the director until 1991. He made significant changes at Pacific, including the hiring of a strength and conditioning coach, the planting of sod on the new football practice field and initiating plans to build the Baun Student Fitness Center. Leland also transformed the department's budget, controlling the outflow of funds while adding staff and scholarships to non-revenue sports.

Leland was the Director of Athletics at Stanford University from the fall of 1991 up until 2005.

He spearheaded significant changes at Stanford, including the completion of the funding for the $23 million Arrillaga Family Sports Center, which opened in 1994. Leland also completed or improved several other facilities, including Cobb Track, Angell Field, the Fencing Center, lighting and landscaping at Sunken Diamond, landscaping at Ford Plaza, renovation of the Stanford Golf Course and the addition of indoor facilities at Taube Tennis Stadium.
