Box Score Cathedral City, Calif. - In the finale of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday afternoon, the Pacific softball team was sunk by a potent Oregon State offense, as the Beavers scored eleven runs in a run-rule shortened contest. The Tigers fall to 3-8 after a 1-4 performance in the five games in Cathedral City. Oregon State improved to 5-10 with the five inning victory.
Senior Megan Foglesong got the first inning started with a single to center field against Oregon State starter Amanda Najdek. Sophomore Melanie Habib advanced Foglesong into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Nicole Zapotoczny reached on an error by second baseman Ya Garcia, advancing Foglesong to third. Freshman Bailey O'Mara came up with an RBI single to center field for a 1-0 Pacific lead, to put the Tigers on the board first.
The Beavers were able to respond against starter junior Dani Bonnet with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Oregon State started the inning with three straight singles by Kori Nishitomi, Hannah Bouska and Dani Gilmore, leading to the first run of the game for the Beavers and a tie score as Nishitomi came home on Gilmore's single. After Bonnet induced a groundout for the first out of the inning, CJ Chirichingo delivered a two-RBI single to score Bouska and Gilmore for a 3-1 lead for Oregon State.
In the second, Najdek surrendered a walk to sophomore Taylor Brink and a single to senior Gabby Goyette, but Megan Foglesong grounded into a double play to end the inning and the Tiger threat. In the bottom half of the inning, Oregon State loaded the bases against Bonnet, but the tiger starter worked out of the jam, inducing a flyout from Alexis Gonzalez with the bases loaded to end the frame.
In the third, Pacific again got two runners on, as Habib walked and senior Taylor Petty reached on an infield single to start the inning in a promising fashion, but the Tigers were unable to get a run across. Oregon State added to the 3-1 lead as Kylie Padilla hit a one out single through the left side and advanced to second on a walk to Ya Gracia. Padilla scored on a ground-rule double by Isabelle Batayola for a 4-1 Oregon State advantage. Garcia came into score for a 5-1 Beavers lead when Amee Aarhus reached on an infield single.
The Tigers got a run back in the top of the fourth as Brink delivered with a ground rule double, advanced to third on Goyette's infield single and scored on an RBI groundout by Megan Foglesong, cutting the Oregon State advantage to a managable 5-2.
The Orange and Black went to the bullpen, turning to senior Tori Shepard in the bottom of the fourth. Shepard allowed a walk to Gilmore to start the inning and surrendered a home run to left center by Gonzalez that strecthed the lead for Oregon State to 7-2.
In the top of the fifth, Petty and Zapotoczny drew back to back walks before Oregon State made a pitching change, summoning Melanie Dembinski in relief of Najdek. Dembinski allowed a hit to O'Mara to load the bases, but junior Alex Steinmehl struck out swinging for the first out of the inning. Freshman Cassidy Gustafson stepped up with the bases loaded and delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Petty and advancing Zapotoczny to third to cut the Oregon State advantage to 7-3. Dembinski limited the damage as Brink popped up to shortstop to end the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Shepard struck out the leadoff hitter Batayola for a quick first out. Aarhus singled to shortstop and Nishitomi singled to center field to put runners on first and second. Bouska grounded into a fielder's choice that forced Aarhus at third for the Tigers' second out of the fifth. However, Gilmore and Gonzalez delivered back-to-back RBI singles for a 9-3 Oregon State lead. The next batter, Chirichingo, doubled to knock in the pair to end the game early, with the 11-3 score triggering the eight-run rule.
For Pacific, O'Mara and Goyette had a pair of hits apiece and Foglesong, Petty, and Brink added one each. O'Mara, Foglesong and Gustafson added RBI.
The Tigers will look to regroup in the home opener against California, who sit just outside the NFCA top 25, on Wednesday at Bill Simoni Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00pm.
