Pacific Splits Slate On Day Two At The Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Cathedral City, Calif. - On the second day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, the Pacific Softball team (3-7)  took down Oklahoma State (8-4), 5-4, benefiting from a patient approach at the plate in the final frame, drawing a one-out single and three straight walks in the bottom of the seventh and scoring the winning run on a walk-off free pass to Taylor Petty. In the second game of the night, Pacific couldn't keep pace with Boise State, falling 4-3 to the Broncos.

The Tigers looked to junior Dani Bonnet to help right the ship after two one-run losses on the first day of the tournament in the desert. The Tiger starter made quick work of the Cowgirls in the top of the first, retiring the side in order, including a strikeout to start the ballgame.

Pacific would jump on the board immediately against Simone Freeman, the Cowgirl starter, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.  Senior Megan Foglesong struck out swinging to start the game but sophomore Melanie Habib singled through the ride side of the infield with one out. Senior Taylor Petty followed with a walk and while junior Alex Steinmehl struck out, Habib and Petty executed a double steal to put two runners in scoring position for the designated home team Tigers. Sophomore Nicole Zapotoczny reached on an error by the third baseman Tiffany Mikkelson, scoring both Habib and Petty to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the first.  Freeman ended up stricking out the side as freshman Cassidy Gustafson would strike out swinging to end the threat.

Bonnet and Freeman would then trade scoreless innings until Pacific erupted for another two runs against Cowgirl reliever Payton Walker in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Sara Anderson reached second on an error by Walker before freshman Bailey O'Mara was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Senior Gabby Goyette struck out swinging but Anderson and O'Mara both advanced a base to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Foglesong followed with a walk to load the bases. Habib roped another single to left center scoring both O'Mara and Anderson for a 4-0 advantage for the Orange and Black.

Neither team got anything across in the fifth frame as new pitcher Meagan Lively kept the Tigers off the board, but Oklahoma State mounted three run rally in the sixth frame. Left fielder Shannon Kaufman singled through the left side and Shelby Davis reached on a fielder's choice that forced Kaufman and second for the first out. Davis then stole second to advance into scoring position before Ari Morrison singled and Goyette was charged with an error that resulted in Davis crossing the plate to put Oklahoma State on the board and cut the Pacific advantage to 4-1. Bonnet issued back to back walks to Tarah Ettinger and Tiffany Mikkleson to load the bases, but Danielle Riddle flied out to left for the second out of the inning. Pinch hitter Whitney Whitehorn delivered with a two run single to cut the Pacific lead to 4-3 before Bonnet was able to get Gessenia De La Cruz to strike out looking to end the top of the sixth.

Petty drew a one-out walk for the Tigers and Zapotoczny singled with two out, but the Tigers were not able to get an insurance run across in the bottom of the inning.

Miranda Calvin doubled to center field to lead of the Oklahoma State seventh. Bonnet recovered to strike out Kaufman and get Davis to ground out to Gustafson at third, but Calvin moved to third on the sacrifice. Morrison followed with a two out single to tie the score at 4-4. After Morrison advanced into scoring positioning on a passed ball and Ettinger walked, the Tigers went to the bullpen for senior Tori Shepard, who got Mikkelson to pop up and preserve the tie.

In the bottom of the seventh, Anderson grounded out to Lively to start the inning, but O'Mara singled up the middle with one out. Junior Kamalei Pitoy came in to pinch run for O'Mara and after Goyette popped up to third for the second out of the inning, Foglesong and Habib drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Taylor Petty. Petty drew a walk of her own, scoring Pitoy for the walk-off victory for the Tigers, a 5-4 win for Pacific.

Shepard was credited with the win, despite facing only one batter. She improves to 2-2 on the year. Lively was tagged with the loss after allowing six walks in her 2.2 innings of work.

Bonnet was effective for the Tigers, going 6.2, allowing six hits and four earned runs, striking out five Oklahoma State batters.

Habib led all players with three hits and recorded two RBI.  Anderson had a pair of singles and scored run while Petty drew three walks and scored a run.

In the second game of the night, starting just after 9:00 pm in Cathedral City, Pacific was unable to get past Boise State, falling to 3-7 as the Broncos improved to 6-7 with the victory.

The Broncos got two quick runs off of Pacific starting pitcher sophomore Carly Mortensen.

Tara Glover singled and stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Jordan Krieger struck out swinging, but MacKenzie Whyte reached on a fielder's choice that scored Glover for a 1-0 Boise State lead. Whyte then stole second and advanced to third on an Ashley Palmer groundout for the second out of the inning. Devon Bridges then brought home Whyte for the second run of the inning and a 2-0 Boise State lead. Mortensen recovered to strike out Makenna Weir to end the inning.

Pacific's bottom of the first inning started promising as Foglesong led off with a double against Boise State starter Rebecca Patton. After a Habib groundout advanced Foglesong to third, Petty walked yet again and took second on a passed ball. Steinmehl grounded to shortstop, but Whyte threw home to get Foglesong at home. Zapotoczny would fly out to Lindsey Nicholson to end the inning without a run crossing for the Tigers.

Mortensen and Patton exchanged scoreless frames in the second, each making quick work of the opposition. In the Boise State half of the third, Jordan Krieger led off with a walk and stole second. Whyte doubled to score Krieger to extend the Boise State lead to 3-0. Mortensen answered back, striking out Ashley Palmer for her second strikeout of the game and getting two quick outs to keep Boise State from furthering the advantage.

Shepard would relieve Mortensen in the fifth, adding another pair of strikeouts in the frame, as Whyte and Weir went down swinging. Shepard's fifth set the tone for the Tigers in the bottom of the inning. Anderson led off with a single and O'Mara walked to put runners at first and second with no out. Gabby Goyette reached on a fielder's choice that nabbed pinch runner freshman Melina Huey out at third for the first out of the inning. O'Mara and Goyette would advance a base apiece on a passed ball by Patton and Foglesong drew a walk to load the bases. Habib popped up to third but Petty came through with a pair of RBI on a single to cut the lead to 3-2 for Boise State.

In the Boise State sixth, Megan Foglesong robbed Lindsey Nicholson of a solo blast, running into the wall in center field to save a run. However, the next batter Hailey Torrez pitch and deposited it over the fence and out of the reach of Foglesong for a home run and a 4-2 Boise State lead.

The Tigers would add a run in the bottom of the sixth, as Zapotoczny led off with a single. Gustafson would reach on a fielder's choice that forced Zapotoczny at second but pinch hitter sophomore Taylor Brink singled to advance Gustafson into scoring position. O' Mara was hit by a pitch that advanced Gustafson to third and Brink to second, loading the bases. Goyette chopped one back to the pitcher and Gustafson was forced at home for the second out of the inning. With the bases still loaded, Foglesong drew a walk, picking up an RBi in the process and cutting the lead to 4-3.

The Tigers would get the winning run up to the plate in the final frame as Petty led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to raise her average to .571, but the senior outfielder was caught trying to steal second, denying the Tigers the tying run in scoring position.

Taylor Petty led Pacific with a pair of hits while Foglesong, Zapotoczny, Anderson, Brink and O'Mara added one a piece.

From the circle, Mortensen and Shepard combined for seven innings, allowing five hits in total over the course of the second game.

After a pair of games ending just before midnight Pacific time, the Tigers will be back in action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic against Oregon State with a quick turnaround time of 12:00 pm. Oregon State will be providing live statistics, with a link avaliable on PacificTigers.com
