Pacific Says Goodbye To Seniors, Habib With 5 RBIs

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - In its final game of the 2014 season, the Pacific Softball team fell 9-6 to the Brigham Young Cougars, despite a grand slam from Melanie Habib in the fourth inning. Pacific finishes its season at 20-28 (8-7 WCC) while Brigham Young (28-21, 9-2 WCC) will have a chance to clinch the inaugural WCC title with a win next weekend against Saint Mary's at home in Provo, Utah.

Saturday was Senior Day at Bill Simoni Field, as the Tigers said goodbye to seniors Gabby Goyette, Megan Foglesong, Taylor Petty and Tori Shepard, a core group of Tigers that represented the last remaining graduating class from the historic 2011 Big West Championship team.

BYU got off to a quick start, again notching first inning runs, striking for a pair against Pacific starter Tori Shepard (7-14), making her final start in the Orange and Black.  BYU opened the game with back to back infield singles from Sydney Broderick and Lauren Bell.  A fielding error and a sacrifice fly by Katie Manuma brought the pair for a 2-0 Cougars lead.

The Tigers  responded in the bottom of the frame, as Goyette reached on an infield single and sophomore Nicole Zapotoczny walked.  Sophomore Melanie Habib singled to right field, scoring Goyette to cut the BYU lead to 2-1.

Shepard tossed a shutdown inning in the second, working around a leadoff single and the Tigers tied the score in the bottom of the second. Freshman Bailey O'Mara reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the second baseman McKenzie St. Clair.  With two down, O'Mara stole third on a delayed steal and came into score as sophomore Sara Anderson reached on an error by the shortstop Lauren Bell, leveling the contest at 2-2.

BYU regained the lead, 4-2, with a home run by Ashley Thompson in the top of the third. The Cougars starter McKenna Bull tossed a shutdown frame in the bottom of the third and Shepard matched the effort with a perfect top of the fourth frame.

In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Cassidy Gustafson led off with a single to left field and Anderson reached on an infield single to shortstop. Goyette hit a ground ball to advance both runners and Petty was walked intentionally to bring up Zapotoczny, who flew out to center field.

Habib made the Cougars pay for walking Petty, delivering a grand slam to left field to solidify her second 5-RBI performance in a seven game stretch. The Tigers took the 6-4 lead into the top of the fifth, but the Cougars cut the lead to 6-5 with an Ashlee Robinson single in the frame.

The Tigers were unable to get a run against BYU reliever Tori Almond (8-6), who became in line for the victory after Katie Manuma homered to tie the score, McKenzie St. Clair doubled into the gap and Carly Duckworth singled to give the Cougars the 7-6 lead.

The Cougars added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and despite getting the first two runners on board to start the bottom of the frame, the Tigers were unable to score, giving BYU to a series sweep.

For the Tigers, Habib's three hit, five RBI performance was the offensive highlight of the day. O'Mara notched a pair of hits, as did junior Alex Steinmehl. Goyette registered her 18th multi-hit game in her final contest as a Tiger while Shepard had five strikeouts over seven innings.

The Tigers finish the season at 20-28 (8-7 WCC) and now look forward to the fresh start of the 2015 campaign.
