Tigers Drop Doubleheader To BYU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Stockton, Calif. - On the first day of a conference finale series, the Pacific Softball team was swept by the BYU Cougars, 3-2 and 8-0. The Tigers fall to 20-27 (8-6 WCC) while the Cougars improve to 27-21 (8-2 WCC) following the doubleheader. Pacific was unable to cool the hot bats of BYU, who struck for the decisive runs in the first inning of both contests.

Pacific starter Tori Shepard (7-13) allowed a three-run home run by Katie Manuma in the top of the first frame in game one that proved to be the difference in the contest.

The Tigers responded against BYU starter Tori Almond (7-6) in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Sara Anderson walked to start the frame and senior Gabby Goyette singled to third base, advancing Anderson to second. The next hitter, Senior Taylor Petty, singled up the middle, scoring Anderson and cutting the BYU advantage to 3-1. Sophomore Nicole Zapotoczny lined into a tough luck double play on a hard hit smash to first base and sophomore Melanie Habib struck out the end the frame.

The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the fifth against Almond. Senior Megan Foglesong walked and freshman Bailey O'Mara reached on a fielding error, setting the table for junior Alex Steinmehl, who bunted both runners into scoring position. With two out, Anderson reached on an error by the second baseman, scoring Foglesong and cutting the lead to just one for the Cougars.

The Tigers would threaten once more against Almond in the sixth, as Petty led off the inning with a single through the left side. However, the Cougars went to the bullpen, summoning McKenna Bull, who retired the side to send the game to the seventh.

Bull pitched two perfect innings, closing out the first game with a scoreless seventh for her fifth save.

In the nightcap, Bull (14-9) got the starting assignment against junior Dani Bonnet (12-7).

The Cougars struck for five first inning runs against Bonnet, punctuated by home runs for Gordy Bravo and Ashley Thompson.  BYU would add an unearned run in the third inning and strike for two more against Bonnet in the fourth, highlighted by a Mercedes O'Connor home run to extend the lead to 8-0.

The Tigers tallied just one hit in the second game of the day, an Anderson single down the left field line.  Zapotoczny's walk in the fifth was the only other baserunner of the run-rule shortened contest.

Pacific will wrap up the series with BYU and the season with Senior Day on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm and fans are encouraged to arrive approximately 20 minutes early for the festivities honoring Gabby Goyette, Megan Foglesong, Taylor Petty and Tori Shepard.
