Box Score Stockton, Calif. - In a midweek non-conference matchup against UC Davis, the Pacific Softball team posted a 10-4 victory, thanks in part to a five-RBI night from sophomore shortstop Melanie Habib, who hit her first career home run in the first inning of the contest. Pacific improves to 18-25 with the victory while Davis falls to 15-28 after the seven run loss.
The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the first inning after junior Dani Bonnet (10-7) shut down the Aggies in the top of the first with a perfect frame. Sophomore Sara Anderson and senior Gabby Goyette reached on back-to-back singles, Anderson was caught stealing but senior Taylor Petty reached on a walk, setting the eventual stage for Habib with two out. Habib delivered a blast to left field, her first career home run, giving Pacific an early 3-0 advantage against UC Davis starter Dana Cruse (7-8).
Bonnet delivered a shutdown inning in the second, and Cruse matched the effort with a scoreless frame of her own. Davis would get to work in the bottom of the third, scoring on a Cat Guidry single and sacrifice flies from Amy Nunez and Kelly Zbroalske to tie the score at three each.
Cruse would be unable to deliver a shutdown inning, however, as Pacific broke the tie with a four- run burst. Goyette led off the bottom of the third frame with a bunt single to catcher and Petty reached on an error by the second baseman Chandler Wagner. Sophomore Nicole Zapotoczny sacrificed the pair into scoring position with a bunt, and Habib again delivered an RBI with a single to center field, scoring Goyette to give Pacific a 4-3 lead.
Senior Megan Foglesong walked and Petty came into score as freshman Bailey O'Mara hit into a fielder's chocie, reaching on the second error of the inning by Wagner. The fielder's choice extended the advantage to 5-3 in favor of the hosts. Junior Alex Steinmehl kept the line moving with a single down the left field line, plating a pair for a 7-3 lead.
In her fourth and final frame of the night, Bonnet delivered another shutdown inning, working around two base-runners, including a double by Kimberly Pena and a single by to start the inning. Petty, making her first appearance of the year in the infield as the third baseman, caught a line out off the bat of Christina Guidry and tagged pinch runner Kaila Olson off of third base for the first two outs of the inning. Bonnet induced a groundnut from Caitlin Voss to end the frame without allowing any damage.
Andrea Reynolds entered the game for the Aggies, and delivered a perfect bottom of the fourth. Senior Tori Shepard entered for the Tigers in the top of the fifth, and worked around a two-out walk for a scoreless frame to match Reynolds.
After two scoreless frames apiece for the relief pitchers, Pacific plated three runs in the top of the sixth thanks to RBI singles from Anderson, Goyette and Habib. The Tigers had the game-ending run on third base, but were unable to send the Aggies to early defeat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Shepard walked two and allowed a run to score on a Chandler Wagner RBI single, but nailed down her second save of the year to seal the victory for the Tigers.
Habib's five RBI night put her in a tie with 13 others for second most in program history. Goyette and Habib each chipped in three hit nights while Anderson had two from the leadoff spot. Steinmehl and Foglesong added one hit each on a night where the offense was on display for the Tigers from start to finish.
Pacific will return to WCC conference play with a clash between conference co-leaders. San Diego will come to Bill Simoni Field on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 am as the Tigers (6-3 WCC) and Toreros (6-3 WCC) do battle with conference implications on the line.
