Box Score 2 Los Angeles, Calif - In the second game of a conference doubleheader, the Pacific softball team outslugged Loyola Marymount, 16-12, setting a new program record for runs in a game in the process. The Tigers improve to 15-22 (4-1 WCC) while LMU sits at 19-19 (0-5 WCC). Taylor Petty continued her hot hitting, with three hits and four RBI to lead the Tigers offensive effort.
Pacific scored first off of Loyola Marymount starter Stephanie Crist as sophomore Melanie Habib doubled with one out and senior Taylor Petty homered to left field, giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.
Tigers starter junior Dani Bonnet (8-7) allowed a home run from Meghan Harman and the Lions got another run across on a wild pitch to tie the score at 2-2 after one frame.
The floodgates opened in the top of the second, as Pacific erupted for ten runs. Freshman Cassidy Gustafson reached on an error by the shortstop Stephanie Maciel and stole second. Junior Kamalei Pitoy and senior Gabby Goyette reached on a pair of fielder's choices, and Melanie Habib singled to center field, giving Pacific a 3-2 lead. Petty then walked with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 4-2.
Sophomore Nicole Zapotoczny reached on an error by Maciel to make it 5-2 before freshman Bailey O'Mara took advantage of a throwing error by pitcher Crist, who glovered a comebacker but threw errantly home attempting a force out, scoring Petty and Habib as the ball trickled away from the catcher Clowdus for a 7-2 Tigers lead.
The Lions went to the bullpen for Andy Wellins, who allowed a two run double to Alex Steinmehl, along with singles to Gustafson and sophomore Sara Anderson as Pacific took an 10-2 lead. Goyette would come back to the plate for her second at bat of the inning, reaching on a fielder's choice, scoring Gustafson and advancing Anderson to second on the third error of the inning by Maciel. Habib then walked with the bases loaded in her second plate appearance of the frame, giving Pacific the 12-2 advantage and a ten run inning.
The Lions responded in the bottom of the inning, with four runs highlighted by 2-RBI doubles by Harman and Alex Finie to cut the Pacific lead to 12-6. In the third, LMU would get yet another run back, as Harman delivered an RBI single off of Bonet to make it a 12-7 game.
Pacific extended the lead to 14-7 in the top of the fourth as Taylor Petty picked up an RBI single, her third RBI of the game, while Zapotoczny delivered a sacrifice fly. Petty doubled in the sixth as Goyette scored on an error by the left fielder and Zapoctoczny singled to right field in the frame, extending the Pacific lead to 16-7.
The Tigers' 16th run set a new program record. The previous high was 15, with the last occurence coming on March 20th, 2011 against New Mexico.
LMU would go on the score the last four runs of the game, including a home run by Amanda Dirks in the bottom of the sixth which extended the game and prevented the Lions from being sent home early via a run-rule victory.
Gustafson would again toe the rubber in relief following the Dirks homer, this time coming in for Bonnet. The freshman allowed a pair of runs but limited the damage, allowing Pacific to escape with a 16-12 run despite the four unanswered.
In the second game, Habib, Petty, Steinmehl and Gustafson all delivered multi-hit performances. Bonnet struck out five in 5.2 innings pitched.
