Four Run Seventh Fuels Pacific Comeback Victory

Box Score

Fresno, Calif. - In the opener of the Fresno State Classic, the penultimate tournament on the schedule, the Pacific Softball team picked up a 5-3 comeback victory thanks to a four run seventh inning and a complete game performance by Junior Dani Bonnet (4-4). With the triumph, Pacific improves to 8-11 overall while the loss dropped Fresno State to 12-9 on the year.

Fresno State starter Jill Compton, who was coming off a complete game shutout against No. 14 Nebraska her last time out, swapped scoreless frames in the first and second innings with Bonnet as the Tiger starter was able to work around a Fresno State baserunner in each inning.

The Bulldogs struck first in the third inning. Whitney Smith led off the frame with a bunt single in front of the plate before senior Gabby Goyette robbed Breanna Moss of at least a single with a diving catch in left field for the first out. The next Bulldog hitter Kapri Angotti followed with a bunt single of her own to put runners at first and second with one out for Fresno State. After Bonnet issued a walk to Michelle Solomon, Vonnie Martin stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI single through the right side, scoring Smith and Angotti to give the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, sophomore Sara Anderson singled to center field to leadoff the inning and sophomore Taylor Brink was hit by an errant Compton pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. After sophomore Kamalei Pitoy reached on a fielder's choice that forced Anderson out at third, sophomore Melanie Habib reached on a fielding error by Martin, who was unable to come up with Habib's grounder, scoring Brink and putting Pacific on the board, cutting the Fresno State lead to 2-1.

With one out in the bottom of the frame, Martin would make up for the error, picking up her third RBI of the contest with a solo home run to left field, restoring the 3-1 lead for the Bulldogs.

Bonnet would get into a bit of trouble in the sixth inning, as Fresno State loaded the bases but was unable to score.

With Hannah Harris in the game in relief of Compton, Anderson grounded out to lead off the seventh. Brink was again hit by a pitch to put a runner on for the Orange and Black. Pitoy worked a walk and Goyette chopped one over the head of Harris for an infield single to load the bases. Habib singled to the second baseman Liza Liddell, who had no play, as Brink came in to score a run and cut the lead to 3-2.

Fresno State went to the bullpen, bringing in Taylor Langdon (1-1) to get the final two outs. Langdon induced a fielder's choice groundout from freshman Bailey O'Mara, as Pitoy was forced out at home for the second out of the inning. Sophomore Nicole Zapotoczny reached on a fielding error, as Martin's throw forced the first baseman Brazil off the bag, scoring Goyette to tie the score at 3-3.

Senior Taylor Petty extended her WCC-leading walk total to 17 with a four pitch walk to give the Tigers a 4-3 advantage. The Tigers would add an insurance run as junior Alex Steinmehl was hit by a Langdon pitch for a 5-3 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Bonnet made quick work of the Bulldogs. Martin fouled out to Goyette in left field, Brazil grounded out to Habib, who made a nice backhanded play and Bonnet struck out Taylor Green to complete the comeback victory and hand Pacific a hard-fought victory.

Bonnet had four strikeouts and allowed three earned runs, improving her record to 4-4 on the year.

Pacific will be back in action at Bulldog Diamond as the Fresno State Classic continues starting at 11:15 am against Colorado State and 3:45pm against New Mexico State. Live Stats and Video streaming links are avaliable on PacificTigers.com
