Tigers Edged In Extras By James Madison

Box Score 1

Honolulu, Hawai'i - In its first game of the third day of Jack In The Box Hawai'i Spring Fling Tournament play, the Pacific softball team was edged by James Madison, as the Dukes rallied to tie the score at 2-2 with an unearned run in the seventh before erupting for a pair of runs in the eighth for the victory against Senior starter Tori Shepard. Pacific falls to 6-11 with the loss as James Madison improves to 12-8 after the late victory.

The game started promising for the Tigers, as Shepard started the game retiring the side in order with three strikeouts. In the bottom of the frame, Senior Taylor Petty reached on a single up the middle with one out, but the Tigers didn't score.

After Shepard pitched another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second, senior outfielder Megan Foglesong led off the bottom of the frame beating out a ground ball to shortstop for an infield single. Foglesong would take second on a throwing error by James Madison starting pitcher Heather Kiefer. Freshman catcher Bailey O'Mara would reach first on the fielder's choice and freshman Cassidy Gustafson would follow with a sacrifice bunt putting both Foglesong and O'Mara into scoring posistion, setting up an RBI situation for junior first baseman Alex Steinmehl. Steinmehl grounded out to Kiefer, but Foglesong scored from third for a 1-0 Tigers lead.

In the top of the third, James Madison would tie the score after manufacturing a run. Tahli Moore reached on an error by sophomore shorstop Melanie Habib. Madyson Moran would follow with a sacrifice bunt advancing moore to second. Moore would steal third base before Mimi Morris grounded out to Habib. Niki Prince followed Morris, beating out an infield single to shortstop, scoring Moore to level the score at 1-1.

Shepard and Kiefer would swap scoreless frames, as Shepard worked around a Habib error and a walk, escaping the fourth without allowing a run.

In the bottom of the fourth, Pacific's offense tacked on a run for a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Nicole Zapotocozny doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning before Megan Foglesong reached on a fielder's choice, as the third baseman Moran tried to catch Zapotocozny off of second instead of throwing to first for the potential groundout. O'Mara grounded into a fielder's choice, forcing Foglesong at second but advancing Zapotocozny to third, putting runners on the corners for Gustafson. The freshman third baseman delievered a single up the middle for an RBI and a 2-1 lead for Pacific.

The score would hold at 2-1 Pacific until the final inning of regulation. Shepard grazed Taylor Newton with an errant pitch to put the leadoff runner on for the Dukes. Moore followed with a sacrifice bunt, advancing Newton into scoring posistion. The next hitter Moran reached on a throwing error by Gustafson that pulled Steinmehl off of first base. In the process, Newton took off from second and Steinmehl threw errantly back to Gustafson in an attempt to nab Newton at third. Newton would come in to level the score at 2-2 to score as the the throw trickled down into foul territory behind third base. Shepard worked around back-to-back walks to preserve the 2-2 tie and send the game into international tiebreaker protocol extra innings.

Jailyn Ford was placed at second base for James Madison to start the inning. After Shepard induced a groundout to Habib for the first out, Caitlin Sandy singled to left field to put runner on the corners. Sandy stole second on the next pitch while Newton was at the plate. Newton delivered a two-run triple into the right center field gap, giving James Madison the 4-2 lead, but was thrown out trying to stretch the gapper into an inside-the-park home run. The next hitter Moore, grounded out to Zapotoczny at second to end the threat and give Pacific a shot of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Habib was placed on second for the Tigers to begin the bottom of the eighth. Taylor Petty flew out to right field for the first out of the inning and Habib advanced to third on a wild pitch while Zapotoczny was at bat. Zapotoczny grounded out to Kiefer for the second out of the inning before Foglesong walked on four pitches to put runners on the corners with two out for O'Mara. O'Mara battled, as the count went full during the at-bat, but eventually lined out sharply to left field to end the contest and send the Tigers to defeat.

Senior outfielder Gabby Goyette had a pair of infield singles while Petty, Zapotoczny, Foglesong and Gustafson added hits for the Orange and Black.

From the circle, Shepard (3-3) pitched eight innings, striking out four and surrendering just one earned run.

James Madison's Kiefer was credited with the win to move to 5-4 after eight innings of work, surrendering just one earned run and one walk.
