Tigers Blanked By No. 23/24 Stanford, 8-0

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Softball team fell 8-0 in five innings to the No. 23/24 Stanford Cardinal in a non-conference clash on Friday night at Bill Simoni Field in Stockton. The Tigers fall to 11-19 with the loss while Cardinal improve to 24-11 with the run-rule victory.

A standing room only crowd of 450 was in attendance at Bill Simoni Field, but the visiting Cardinal seemed unfazed during the first frame, striking for five against Tiger starter senior Tori Shepard (4-8).

Shepard walked Leah White and Kayla Bonstrom to begin the game before Kylie Sorenson roped a double into the gap in left center, scoring White and advancing Bonstrom to third. A walk to Erin Ashby loaded the bases for the Cardinal, and with one out, Bessie Noll walked, scoring Bonstrom for a 2-0 advantage for Stanford.

The next hitter Hannah Winter singled up the middle, scoring Sorenson to make it 3-0.  Stanford would tack on a pair on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to lead 5-0 after the top of the first.

Stanford starter Madi Schreyer (17-6), set down Pacific in order in the bottom of the frame before junior Dani Bonnet came in to relieve Shepard to start the top of the second.  Bonnet worked around a pair of base runners without surrendering a run in the second, despite two baserunners for the Cardinal.

Schreyer worked around a single by Taylor Petty to lead off the Pacific half of the second and Stanford would add a pair in the top of the third, highlighted by Leah White single that scored two for a 7-0 Stanford advantage.

In the bottom of the third, Pacific got back to back singles from freshman Cassidy Gustafson and Taylor Brink to start the inning, but were unable to put a run across the plate.

Bonnet pitched a scoreless fourth, working around a one-out single by Jessica Plaza before Freshman Bailey O'Mara and Petty led off the fourth with back-to-back singles but the Tigers again could not get a run home.

In the top of the fifth, Stanford would add their eight and final run, as Cassandra Roulund led off the frame with a single and stole second base during Kaitlin Schaberg's at bat. Bonnet struck out  Schaberg and White in the inning, but Kayla Bonstrom delivered a two-out single up the middle to give Stanford an 8-0 advantage and threaten to end the night early for the Tigers by the run rule.

In the bottom of the frame, senior Gabby Goyette would leg out a two-out single, but Schreyer completed the six-hit shutout, finishing with just one strikeout over the five frames.

For the Tigers, Petty had a pair of singles while Gustafson, Brink, Goyette and O'Mara eached chipped in one. Bonnet went four innings, surrendering three runs on eight hits while recording three strikeouts in relief.

The Tigers will be back in action under the lights at Bill Simoni Field on Tuesday, April 1 against the Fresno State Bulldogs. Game time is 6:00 pm.
