Box Score 2 Stanford, Calif. - In the opening game of the Nike Stanford Invitational, Cal Poly (3-3) bounced back from an early four run deficit to defeat Pacific (1-1) at Boyd and Jill Family Stadium on the campus of tournament host Stanford.
The Tigers wasted no time getting to work on offense, striking for four in the first frame against Cal Poly starter Chloe Wurst (3-3), the only pitcher to see action for the Mustangs so far in 2014.
After sophomore Sara Anderson grounded out to start the contest, senior Gabby Goyette slapped a single through the left side of the infield. Senior Megan Foglesong followed with a single to the left side of her own before fellow senior Taylor Petty reached on an infield single that was deflected by Mustangs shortstop Kim Westlund to load the bases. Junior Alex Steinmehl reached on a fielder's choice that forced Goyette out at home for the second out of the inning but freshman Cassidy Gustafson stepped up in the clutch. On a 1-1 count, the Tigers' third baseman rocketed a line drive over the fence in left field and into the shrubbery below the scoreboard for her first career home run to give Pacific a 4-0 advantage.
Cal Poly responded immediately in the bottom of the inning with two runs off of Tigers starter sophomore Carly Mortensen (1-1). Ashley Romano singled through the left side to score two and cut the early Pacific lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the third, Cal Poly mounted a rally to take a 5-4 lead. Breana West lead off the inning with a bloop single to right field and Romano reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Ashley Romano advanced to second and on a throwing error by Gustafson to put runners at second and third for the Mustangs. Mariah Cochiolo then doubled home the pair to tie it. After Sierra Highland flew out to right field, Cami Brown singled to advance Cochiolo to third and put runners on the corners for the Mustangs.
The Tigers went to the bullpen, with junior Dani Bonnet coming in to relieve Mortensen, who was finished after 2.1 innings pitched, surrendering three earned runs. Bonnet was able to induce a fly out from Andersen, but Cochiolo tagged up at third and came in just ahead of Alex Steinmehl's tag on the sacrifice fly to give Cal Poly an advantage they would not relinquish. Bonnet finished the game, allowing one earned run in 3.2 innings of work.
Cal Poly would add a pair of insurance runs in the latter stages of the game. In the bottom of the 5th, after a Cochiolo double, Sierra Hyland reached on an error by Goyette that allowed Cochiolo to score easily from second. In the bottom of the sixth, Kim Westlund doubled, West walked and Cochiolo doubled to score Westland for the seventh and final Cal Poly run of the game.
Petty went 2-4 with a pair of singles and Goyette, Foglesong and freshman Bailey O'Mara eached picked up a single of their own. Gustafson's grand slam was the only extra base hit of the game for the Tigers.
Pacific will next be in action at 12:30pm today against the Bradley Braves as part of the Stanford Nike Invitational.
