Tigers Drop 9-1 Decision to Bradley at Stanford Nike Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Stanford, Calif. - The Pacific softball team dropped its first game on the second day of the Stanford Nike Invitational, falling 9-1 in a run-rule shortened 5 innings to Bradley.

Freshman Cassidy Gustafson, the Tigers third baseman for the first three games of the season, took the mound for her first collegiate pitching appearance. After a walk to the first batter she faced, Brianne Joseph, and two wild pitches, Gustafson allowed a single to Marina Groenwegen that scored the first run run of the game to give Bradley a 1-0 advantage in the first frame. Alex Chandler walked and advanced to third on two consecutive wild pitches before Alyson Clemente also drew a free pass. A passed ball by junior catcher Alex Steinmehl brought in Groenwegen for a 3-0 Bradley lead. Shannon King stepped to the plate next and knocked in Chandler with an RBI single to extend the Braves lead to 3-0.

Gustafson went to third base as sophomore Carly Mortensen was summoned from the bullpen to work out of the jam. Mortensen got Kendall Duffy to ground out and Brittany Burgess out on a fielders choice to end the threat in the Bradley half of the first.

After Bradley pitcher Jaelen Hull set Pacific down in order in the top of the 2nd, Joseph tripled to lead off the bottom half of the inning and the next hitter Baliegh Basham was hit by a Mortensen pitch. Basham advanced to third and Joseph scored when Mortensen threw a wild pitch. Basham scored when Steinmehl made a throwing error on the feed to Mortensen covering home. Bradley was up 5-0 before Alex Chandler stepped up and hit a long fly ball to deep left field that appeared off the bat to be destined over the fence for a home run, but senior Gabby Goyette made an outstanding catch, running into the wall to save multiple runs and stop the Bradley scoring threat at 5-0.

Bradley would add four more on in the bottom of the third after Burgess reached on a Mortensen error to start the inning. Singles by Joseph and Basham loaded the bases for Groenewegen, who reached on a fielder's choice and picked up an RBI in the process. After Chandler walked to reload the bases, Clemente hit a sacrifice fly for and King tripled in a pair for a 9-0 Braves advantage.

Pacific would not be shutout, however, as the Tigers got a run across in the fifth and final frame. Jessica Pasco walked to start the fifth, took second on a groundout by freshman Melina Huey, advanced to third on a Gabby Goyette single and scored on a Sara Anderson groundout to cut the lead to 9-1 for Bradley, the final score of the contest.

Goyette was the only Pacific hitter with multiple hits, recording a pair of singles. Sophomore Melanie Habib added a double. From the circle, junior Dani Bonnet pitched a scoreless fourth with two strikeouts in relief of Mortensen.
