Grand Slam Helps Tigers Take Opener of UC Riverside Tournament

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - A Cassidy Gustafson grand slam in the sixth inning against Missouri-Kansas City helped the Tigers open up UC Riverside Tournament play on Friday morning with a 9-1 (6) victory. Pacific would end up splitting on the day as they fell 8-7 to UC Riverside. In game one, The Tigers strung together 13 hits in the contests while only giving up three in the victory. Marissa Young tossed six innings with just as many strikeouts as Pacific run ruled the 'Roos in six. Caitlyn Sung went 3-for-4 at the plate and Cassidy Gustafson hit her second-career grand slam which secured the victory for Pacific. Kenya Lindstrom got the start in game two, going three innings while giving up four earned in the loss. Pacific now sits at 15-17 on the year. 

 

Game One

Caitlyn Sung led off the game with a single up the middle and with one out, moved to second following Molly Bourne's walk. Sydney Lahners was hit by a pitch, and with two down Rachel Sellers was plunked to walk in a run and put the Tigers on the board. 

The Tigers made it 2-0 in the second as Sung reached on an error by the third baseman and Haylee Moran-Rowen tripled to right, scoring Sung. Next batter Bourne reached on an error by the shortstop, which quickly plated Moran-Rowen and the Orange and Black saw themselves with an early 3-0 advantage. 

Pacific added another in the fourth on a Lahners single to left which scored Sung, and Missouri-Kansas City got it right back the next inning to make it 4-1. The Orange and Black put the game away in the bottom of the sixth scoring five runs. Sung led off with an infield single and with one down, Bourne worked a walk. Lahners singled down the left field line which loaded the bases and set the table for Gustafson, who set her second career grand slam over the wall. Taylor Covington ended the game with an RBI double to left-center, securing the run-rule victory. 

Game Two

The Highlanders got on the board first in the second inning by plating three runs on four hits. The Tigers were able to get two right back as Taylor Covington reached on an error, Caitlyn Sung hit an infield single and Haylee Moran-Rowen reached on an another error to load the bases. Next batter Molly Bourne was able to knock in Covington as the senior reached on a fielder's choice, making it 3-1. Pacific narrowed the deficit by one on another bases loaded fielder's choice, this time off the bat of Cassidy Gustafson to make it 3-2. 

Riverside added runs in the third and fourth to make it a 5-2 game. However in the sixth, Rachel Sellers started the rally with single up the middle and Samantha Owen followed with a walk. Caitlyn Reynolds loaded the bases on an infield single and pinch hitter Starr Vang walked to force in a run. With one out, Moran-Rowen singled to right, scoring Reynolds and Owen which knotted the score at 5-5. Pacific pulled ahead on a Molly Bourne single up the middle which scored another pair and made it 7-5 Tigers. 

The next half inning the Highlanders tied the score once again after scoring a pair of their own, and plated the go ahead run in the bottom of the seventh to win on a walk-off single. 

The Tigers open up day two play tomorrow against Missouri-Kansas City at 9 AM before taking on Dartmouth at 11:30 AM. Pacific caps off tournament play on Sunday against UC Riverside at 12:30 PM.
