Stockton, Calif. - Sem Verbeek won his eighth-straight match, but the No. 28 San Diego Toreros took a 4-1 decision over the No. 70 Pacific men's tennis team Friday at Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
After an almost four hour wait for first serve due to weather, the Tigers and Toreros jumped right in to singles action.
At first singles, Verbeek improved to 8-0 in WCC action with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Uros Petronijevic. At second singles, Jordan Angus topped Daniel Alameh, 6-4, 6-2, while Jaan Kononov posted a 7-5, 6-4win over Miguel Diaz at fourth singles.
Alexandros Araouzos topped Alex Giannini, 7-6, 6-3 at fifth, while Joshua Page downed Bernardo Oliveira, 6-3, 7-5 at sixth singles.
Jose Chamba and Filip Vittek split the first two sets, with Chamba leading in the third when USD clinched the match, 7-5, 2-6, 5-2, unfinished.
Doubles were not played.
"Really close match today," head coach Ryan Redondo commented. "We were actually in positions to win sets in all matches but #2. Jose actually had a match point and he didn't get to finish. Sem did a great job of coming back after a slow start. We will need to execute a bit better tomorrow. At the end of the day, we put ourselves in great positions and tomorrow we will need to take them. It should be fun to see them go through our last regular season battle."
San Diego remains undefeated in West Coast Conference play at 7-0, and improve to 19-7 overall. Pacific falls to 13-12 overall and 5-3 in the WCC.
The Tigers will wrap the regular season on Saturday against BYU at a 1 p.m.
