MORAGA, Calif. – Pacific will be playing meaningful tennis on Saturday, as the team needs a win over Saint Mary's at 1 p.m. to keep its WCC Tournament hopes alive.
Fortunately for the Tigers (7-15, 1-5 WCC), Saint Mary's (7-13, 0-5 WCC) has struggled over the last three matches. The Gaels have been shut out by Portland, Santa Clara and San Diego and have not defeated a D-I opponent since March 7.
Pacific meanwhile is attempting to snap a five-match slide. Last time out, the team very nearly overcame a doubles point deficit to defeat Gonzaga. Sophomores
Jonty Giesen and
Nico Rating alongside redshirt senior
Terence Das all scored points in the singles portion but the Tigers could not secure the final winning point.
Against the Gaels, Pacific has pitched a shutout in each of the last two meetings – most recently in 2025. In that 2025 win, junior
Christof Schaertlin Coffey is the only returning point scorer from the singles half of the match and Giesen returns as one half a point scoring pair in doubles.
Giesen is a player to watch for the Tigers as he needs just one more doubles and singles win to reach double figures in both categories. Both Schaertlin Coffey and freshman
Reuben De Klerk also need just one more doubles win to reach ten on the season, and have been recently paired up to great success. As a duo, the junior and freshman have an 8-4 record and have won their last two outings.
Should Pacific win on Saturday, the team will need help from Gonzaga to grant the Tigers entry into the WCC tournament. If Gonzaga defeats Portland, it will create a three-way tie for the final two spots in the bracket, and by virtue of Pacific defeating Portland on opening day of conference play, the Bulldogs and Tigers would clinch the tiebreaker.
