Doubleheader Sweep Gives Tigers Fifth-Straight Victory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Stellar pitching and timely hitting on Saturday helped the Tigers get both games of the doubleheader against Santa Clara, with game one ending in a 7-1 win and game two being a 2-0 victory. The pair of wins gives Pacific five-straight victories, which is their longest win streak this season.

In the first game, Pacific put together 13 hits in the contest including seven straight in their six-run fifth inning. Marissa Young tossed all seven innings, allowing no earned with six strikeouts in her eighth win of the season. Five Tigers logged multiple hits, including Cassidy Gustafson who went 3-for-4 with one batted in and a run scored. In game two the Tigers put together another double-digit hitting performance as Pacific logged 10 hits in the win. Hailey Reed went the distance in the shutout victory, her third of the season, striking out four and allowing just three hits. At the plate she also went 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Samantha Owen added a pair of hits.

The victories propel the Tigers to 23-24 on the year, 6-5 in West Coast Conference play while the losses drop Santa Clara to 21-32 overall, 4-7 in conference action.

Game One

Marissa Young opened up the game retiring the Broncos in order in the first and second, and continued to hold the Bronco offense in check as she sat them down in order in the fourth; capped off with a strikeout of Goulart which was one of her six strikeouts in the contest.

With one down in the fifth, Haylee Moran-Rowen singled to right for her second hit of the afternoon and Caitlyn Sung followed suit with a single of her own. Hailey Reed loaded the bases on a base hit to left field, which brought up Sydney Lahners who put Pacific on the board on a single to right. Rachel Sellers kept the rally going as the junior knocked in Sung and Reed on a base hit down the left field line making it 3-0.

Next batter Cassidy Gustafson reloaded the bases on a single to the pitcher. This brought up Samantha Owen, who gave Pacific their seventh-straight base hit and knocked in another run to widen the lead. It quickly became 5-0 for the visitors as Caitlin Reynolds reached on a fielder's choice, which plated pinch-runner Christin Stein. A walk to Ralene Estrada scored another, giving the Orange and Black a 6-0 advantage.

The Broncos were retired in order again in the bottom half of the fifth on just four pitches from Young. Pacific made it 7-0 in the sixth as Lahners doubled to right and Gustafson doubled to left for her third hit of the day. Santa Clara got the run back in the bottom half on Burns' single, making it 7-1. Young closed out the game like she started it with a one-two-three inning in the seventh to cap off the win for Pacific.

Game Two

In the top of the second with two down, Caitlin Reynolds singled to right and Ralene Estrada walked to give the Tigers runners on first and second with a chance to get on the board early. However James got Haylee Moran-Rowen to pop out to the second baseman to end the threat. After giving up a double in the bottom of the first, Hailey Reed settled in nicely, retiring the hosts in the third and fourth as we remained in a scoreless tie.

The Tigers finally broke through in the seventh as with one down Reed singled to the shortstop and Sydney Lahners ripped a base hit up the middle. Rachel Sellers followed with a double to left-center, which scored Reed to put Pacific on the board and advanced Lahners to third. Next batter Cassidy Gustafson plated pinch-runner Faith Apolskis on a sacrifice fly to center, which put the Orange and Black up 2-0.

Needing a pair of runs to stay alive, the Broncos' Goulart tripled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate. Reed was able to get Modesto to pop out to Samantha Owen at second base. Next batter Barnard singled, which brought up France who struck out swinging for the second out of the inning. Some more drama ensued as Delfino walked to load the bases, bringing up Fisher. On a 3-2 pitch Reed was able to get her to ground out to Gustafson at third to secure the nail bitting victory.

The Orange and Black will look to make it two-straight conference series sweeps tomorrow, with game three beginning at 12 PM.
