STOCKTON, Calif. - In their second match in as many days, the Pacific Tigers came away with a 5-2 win over Nevada, winning five of six singles matches for the overall win. The win puts Pacific's overall record at 5-3 now as they prepare for their final road matches before hosting the Pacific Mountain Invitational.
"Today was a great report card of where we are right now," said Head Coach Ryan Redondo. "Congratulations to the team for coming out and responding after a tough match yesterday."
Miguel Diaz and Nathan Hampton gave Pacific their only doubles win, triumphing 6-3 in the third pairing. Diaz would also win his singles match, this time playing in the first spot. The senior defeated Nevada's Julien Evrard in a tie-breaker, winning 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (4).
Tadiwa Chinamo earned his second singles victory of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Chinamo's win was one of Pacific's four two-set sweeps in singles matches on the day.
Akram El Sallaly had a hard-fought victory in the third spot for Pacific. El Sallaly won 7-6 in the first set, coming back from a deficit to get the W. He would use that momentum to take set two 6-3 and get the match win.
Pacific's overall victory was sealed with Alex Giannini's 7-5, 6-1 win over Nevada's Kostya Nesterenko. Giannini fought out of a tie in the first set for the win, then dominated Nesterenko in the second set.
Ross Watson had the final win of the day for Pacific with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Peter O'Donovan. Bryan Husin had a strong first set with a 6-0 win but would lose in three sets 0-6, 7-6, 6-3.
"As a coaching staff, we saw a lot to take from this match and that's exciting. We gave the doubles point away in my opinion and had opportunities to close that out but the team showed a lot of backbone and came out very strong in singles," said Redondo.
The Tigers will take on Cal Poly and UC Irvine on the road next, traveling to San Luis Obispo for two games on February 18. Redondo was excited for the upcoming matches, saying that "I want to see us play a more complete match from start to finish. We will respond and get ready to compete against two other tough Big West opponents this next weekend."
