Box Score Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's soccer team was nipped by San Francisco, 1-0, on a late goal from the Dons off a deflection in the box, Friday night at Knoles Field. USF moves to 12-3-3 overall, 6-1 in West Coast Conference play while Pacific falls to 3-11-1 overall, 2-5 in WCC action
Through 85 minutes, the Tigers and Dons were locked up in a scoreless battle, but in the 86th, an attempted cross was deflected and wound up in control of Amanda Whittle, who buried it for the lone goal of the match.Pacific goalkeeper Lena Perry and USF goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel each posted six saves between the pipes.
The Dons outshot Pacific 17-10 for the match, but shots were near even in the second half at 9-8 and near even in terms of shots on target at a 7-6 USF advantage. In the first half, Perry and Schiffel traded saves as the two sides looked to find their rhythm.
The Tigers sprung Lily Higashino for a chance in the 30th minute, but her shot eased just over the cross bar, floating out of danger. Pacific then played a long breakout pass for Mati Long, but Long lost her footing as USF recollected on the counter attack.
The Dons amped up the pressure in the final 15 minutes of the half, forcing Perry into another save, while the Tigers defense posted a block and shots from Maddy Glaser and Micaela Mercado sail wide.USF posted an 8-2 edge in shots in the first frame, as the game remained scoreless into the second half.
In the 52nd, Hannah Stammer looked to give Pacific the lead, but Schiffel made a diving save to deny the chance. Alex Alugas' attempt in the 58th minute sailed high for USF. In the 71st minute, Ashley Arnett ripped a shot on target, but Schiffel was up to the task to keep the match deadlocked. Arnett added another shot in the 74th minute, but missed high.
Perry posted a save on Whittle, leading to a corner kick, but the Tigers defense held strong.
As the clock ticked towards the 87th minute, Whittle found the deflected cross land at her feet and released a quick shot into the back of the netting for the game's lone goal. Following Whittle's goal, the Tigers put pressure on USF with Schiffel forced to make a stop on Samia Adam's shot in the 88th minute, while Stammer had an attempt blocked in the 89th, drawing a corner kick. The Dons defended the corner attempt in the waning seconds.
The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in a WCC match against No. 15 Santa Clara on Senior Day. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as the Tigers honor Shayda Ansari and Cheyenne Somers.
