Palo Alto, Calif. - Devon Thumwood scored four goals, but No. 7 Pacific's upset bid of No. 2 Stanford fell short as the Cardinal pulled away in the final three minutes for an 11-8 win.
Brady Moore made a career-high 21 saves in goal for Pacific.
Ikko Saito's goal early in the fourth quarter pulled Pacific within 7-6, and Thumwood's penalty kept the Tigers within one at 8-7 with 3:14 to play. But Stanford rattled off three straight defensive stops and three straight goals to seize control of the game.
Pacific fell behind early as Tim Reeves scored the Tigers only goal of the first quarter and trailed 4-1 after eight minutes.
Thumwood scored three goals in the second quarter as Pacific charged back. He picked up an even strength goal to cut the gap to 4-2, and then a pair of 6-on-5 goals which brought the Tigers within 5-4.
Ben Stevenson answered a goal by Bret Bonanni as the Tigers were within one at 6-5 at halftime.
The third quarter was a defensive standoff, with #8 tallying the lone goal of the period.
In the fourth, Alex Bowen answered Saito's goal for a 8-6 Stanford lead. After Thumwood finished his five-meter penalty shot, Bonanni, Jackson Kimbell and Connor Stapleton converted for the Cardinal before Michael Woodbury tallied to settle on the finals score of 11-8.
Pacific falls to 13-11 overall, 1-6 in MPSF play. Stanford improves to 22-3 overall, 7-1 in MPSF action.
The Tigers will face No. 9 Pepperdine on Sunday at noon at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
