STOCKTON, Calif.—Pacific women's soccer team won its final two matches of the season to finish with a 9-9-1 mark, continuing the turnaround for the program which has now recorded three straight seasons at .500 or better, a tremendous turnaround from the previous 10 losing seasons. The Tigers are a combined 26-18-14 over the past three years. The program has won more matches over the past three years than the previous nine seasons combined (24-123-12).
The Tigers were helped by a winning non-conference mark, finishing with a 6-4-1 record including a 4-0-1 tally at Knoles Field. Pacific now has a streak of 14 non-conference home matches without a loss (9-0-5) extending more than three seasons with the last loss coming in the spring of 2021.
The Tigers were disappointed to finish seventh in the tough West Coast Conference this season with a 3-5 record, but the three wins are the most WCC victories for the program since the 2013 team also won three matches in Pacific's inaugural year in the conference. The WCC sent three teams to the NCAA Tournament with Santa Clara and Gonzaga advancing to the second round.
"Despite the fact that we all wanted more from the Fall 2023 season results-wise, we look back on the season with so much appreciation for how important seasons like this are for us as a whole," said co-head coach
J.J. Wozniak. "We had some adversity to deal with throughout this past season, both on the injury front and having a relatively young group consistently on the field. But our players should feel good with how they handled the challenges they faced and for the effort they gave through the entirety of the season."
The Tigers had four players score in double figures this season. Fifth-year senior
Jaida Nyby led Pacific with 20 points on eight goals and four assists. Sophomore
Alexis Pashales emerged as a strong scoring threat. After scoring a single goal with an assist as a freshman, she recorded 17 points on seven goals and three assists. Sophomore
Anaya Shelton tallied 14 points on five goals and four assists while fifth-year senior
Lauren Frohan had 13 points on five goals and three assists.
Three of Pacific's leading scorers earned a spot on All-WCC teams. Nyby was selected to Second Team All-WCC for the second time in her career. Pashales and Shelton were honorable mention selections.
The Tigers ranked in the top five in many of the statistical categories in the league during the 2023 slate. Pacific was fourth in points (102), goals (36) and assists (30).
On defense, the Tiger goalkeepers were second in the WCC with 88 saves. Freshman
Libby Davy made a team-leading 54 stops in 14 contests. The Adelaide, South Australia native got her first career shutout in the 3-0 victory against Fresno State (9/14). Senior
Juliana Alexander, who saw action in seven contests, recorded 34 saves. The Bakersfield, Calif., native earned her first conference shutout against San Diego (10/7).
Pacific bids farewell to six (only five departing players are mentioned) seniors on the team. Nyby finishes her Tigers career with 42 points on 17 goals and eight assists in 70 contests. Frohan leaves Pacific having competed in 70 career games while notching 23 points on eight goals and seven assists.
Alexander had the most action during her senior season. She finishes her goalkeeping career with eight game appearances, 37 saves and two shutouts.
Graduate student
Ryanne Molenaar competed in 82 career games and posted 28 points on 10 goals and eight assists. Fifth-year
Hana Rosenblatt finishes with 80 contests and seven points on one goal and five assists. The Roseville, Calif., native scored her first career goal this season against UC Santa Barbara (8/27).
Laila Saravia is the lone senior that will return to the squad in 2024. The Houston, Texas native saw action in 57 games and currently has three career goals.
"The group realized how important some things are to being able to achieve and sustain success each and every match," said co-head coach
Danesha Adams. "It was also really cool to see how determined the group was to finish the season with two big wins, get our overall record back to .500 and to make sure we won three WCC games this season. The future is bright for Pacific women's soccer. But what is most exciting is knowing the players can't wait to get back on the field and prepare to make sure we meet and exceed all expectations for the Fall 2024 season."
