Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. – The Tigers came back from an early doubles loss to defeat Sacramento State 4-3. It came down to the final set between
Peter Alam and Voros, with Alam winning (4-6, 7-5, 6-4).
The Hornets struck first, winning two of three doubles matches.
Liam Puttergill and
Ran Amar won their doubles match 6-3.
Singles is where the action started for the Tigers. After an early loss from
Aleska Mardjonovic (0-6, 1-6), the Tigers were down 2-0. Quick wins from
Brandon Park (6-3, 6-3) and
Ran Amar (7-5, 6-4) brought the Tigers back even with the Hornets 2-2. With three singles matches still competing, it would be a close finish. Puttergill won (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) to put the Tigers ahead, 3-2.
Coby McCaig and Alam were both trailing as the Hornets looked to steal the win from the Tigers. McCaig came back from down 5-0 in the final set, winning four straight and helping to swing the momentum back towards the Tigers. "I saw Coby was still fighting," says Alam on the final few minutes of the match. "He was 5-0 down, and then he came back. He stayed in it, which took a lot of pressure off me because the focus was not all on me. When it was just down to me, my focus just came down to winning the match." McCaig ended up falling (6-0, 4-6, 4-6), and the two teams were all tied at three.
Alam had lost his first set, 6-4, before coming back to win the second set, 7-5. Alam was down 3-1 in the final set before winning five straight to secure the win for the Tigers in front of nearly 100 home fans.
Next week, the Tigers are headed up to Boise, Idaho, where they will take on Idaho State on Friday, March 4.
