THINGS TO KNOW:
  • Through nine games played, James Arakawa has impressed at the plate once again, as the junior currently leads the WCC in batting average with a .455 clip. Notably, he has recorded at least one hit in each contest so far. On the basepaths, the middle infielder also is tied for third in the conference with three steals.
  • Finding his rhythm early, senior Alex LeForestier also sits 14th in the WCC with a .344 average, notching 11 total hits in 32 at-bats.
  • Overall, Pacific is third as a team in the conference in slugging percentage (.396) and fourth in on-base percentage (.359).
  • On the mound, sophomore Grant Stevens is tied for the WCC lead with 2 total wins. As a team, Pacific has allowed the least amount of hits (70) while also placing fourth in the conference with a team ERA of 4.50.

SCOUTING THE GAELS:
  • Last time out, Saint Mary's lost three of four to California, but defeated the Golden Bears in their series finale on Sunday, Mar. 7, 8-3. Scheduled to start the finale against the Tigers as well, Ryan Taurek made his first start of the season for the Gaels and delivered in a big way, pitching into the sixth inning, allowing just four hits and one earned run with three walks and four strikeouts. After allowing a leadoff single on the first pitch of the game, Taurek did not allow his next hit until the fourth inning to notch his first victory of the new season.
  • First baseman Justin Banks has displayed a tremendous amount of  raw power to begin 2021, as the left-hander now has five home runs on the season, which is already more than the Gaels hit during the entire shortened 2020 season.
  • Greg Moore was named Saint Mary's head baseball coach in June of 2019 and enters his second season in 2021. Moore previously served as the head coach for Cal State Northridge over the past six seasons.
  • Josh Nashed was named the Gaels' pitching coach in advance of the 2020-21 school year. Recently, Nashed was the Director of Player Development during the 2020 season where he implemented pitching technology and oversaw data collection for SMC.
