SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Senior
Jake Tandy crushed a walk-off grand slam to lift the Pacific baseball program to its first-ever West Coast Conference Tournament victory over No. 3 seed San Francisco, 8-4, on Thursday night from Scottsdale Stadium.
The No. 2 seed Tigers (24-28-1, 15-11-1 WCC) loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning and Tandy saw one pitch, delivering the no-doubt shot to defeat the Dons (25-29, 15-12 WCC) in the second round of the WCC Tournament.
"It was a big win," head coach
Reed Peters said. "Pitching wise, it was a great job by our starter
Zach Todd. We answered the call. Every time they scored, we scored. That's what good teams do. Tandy with the grand slam. Exactly what we needed. Hopefully we can keep it rolling!"
Tandy is no stranger to the heroics. The WCC All-Conference First Team selection walloped his third career grand slam against the Dons, including the second one of a walk-off variety, which he did on April 18, 2025, at Klein Family Field.
"I was looking for a pitch over the middle of the plate," Tandy said. "I was ready for it and I attacked it. This is all the momentum we need going forward as a squad to know that we can do it and hang with the best of the best. We are going to keep it rolling."
Todd gave Pacific a quality start, going 6.2 innings and striking out five batters on five hits and allowing just two earned runs. Junior
Regan Carter (3-3) picked up the program's first-ever victory in the WCC Tournament following Todd's outing.
The Dons struck first, but the Tigers responded immediately. Junior
Braeden Schnabel, who had a team-high three hits, and senior
Grant MacArthur scored on senior
Blaine French's two-RBI single to give Pacific a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
Following a game-tying home run by USF, Pacific quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Redshirt sophomore
JT Shank knocked a two-run moonshot to right-center to put the Tigers back ahead at a 4-2 margin.
The Dons were able to rally and tie the game up at 4-4 in the top of the ninth, but Tandy ended the night with the walk-off grand slam to seal the deal. With four RBIs on the night, Tandy now has a career-high 49 RBIs on the season, which surpasses Jason Vorhauer in single-season RBIs at No. 10 on the list.
Up next, the Tigers turn their attention to No. 5 seed Saint Mary's in the winner's bracket tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Scottsdale Stadium.
