Tigers Win In Walk-Off Fashion To Take Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STOCKTON, Calif. - Caitlin Reynolds picked the perfect time to hit her first career home run as the sophomore belted a walk-off two-run home run in the eighth inning of game two on the day to give the Tigers their second win of the afternoon over visiting Loyola Marymount on Saturday. Pacific took game one by a score of 6-5 before winning game two in extras 3-1 (8).

Marissa Young went the distance in game one, allowing three earned while striking out five. Sydney Lahners went  3-for-4 at the plate with two batted in and two runs scored, and Cassidy Gustafson and Ralene Estrada both added a pair of hits in the victory. In the second game, the Tigers battled back to tie the game in the seventh and force extras before Reynolds sent everyone home in the eighth inning in with her two-run blast. Hailey Reed threw all eight innings with three strikeouts and went 2-for-3 at the plate.

The victories propel the Tigers to 20-24 on the year, 3-5 in West Coast Conference play while the losses drops LMU to 16-28 overall, 2-6 in conference action.

Game One

The Lions got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half Caitlyn Sung led off with a walk and Hailey Reed moved her to second with a  single. Molly Bourne advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Sydney Lahners scored them both on a single to right-center, knotting the score at 2-2. Rachel Sellers followed with a walk, moving Lahners to second, and Cassidy Gustafson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two down, Ralene Estrada came to the plate and reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed both Lahners and Sellers to score and give Pacific a 4-2 lead.

Marissa Young led off the second striking out the side, which were three of her five strikeouts of the afternoon. In the third with a runner on first, Brown hit a grounder to Estrada at short, who was able to step on second and fire over to first for the double play.

Lahners led off the third with a double to left-center, her second hit of the day. With one down Gustafson singled to the third baseman which advanced Lahners to third. This brought up Caitlin Reynolds, who was able to score Lahners on a groundout to the second baseman, and bring the Tiger lead to 5-2.

Solid defensive plays by the Orange and Black sat the Lions in order in the fourth and fifth innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Gustafson led off with a home run to right field, her team-leading eighth of the year.

LMU inched back in the seventh as pinch hitter Pogni hit a two-run home run to left and plated another on a single to right by Brown, making it 6-5. However Young was able to get Manley to ground out to Estrada for the out, sealing the victory.

Game Two

As they did in game one, the Lions got on the board first as Harman scored on an error to make it 1-0. With two out in the second, Caitlin Reynolds walked and Ralene Estrada ripped a single to center, moving Reynolds to second and bringing up Haylee Moran-Rowen who was looking to tie things. However Wellins was able to get the senior to ground out to short, ending the inning.

In the fourth Cassidy Gustafson led off with a walk and Reynolds moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt. She moved to third on a wild pitch with Estrada at the plate, who struck out swinging for the second out. This brought up Moran-Rowen, but Wellins once again was able to get her to ground out, and Pacific was still scoreless.

The Lions put runners on in the fifth and sixth, but could not bring them around to extend their lead. With one down in the seventh Estrada walked and Moran-Rowen reached on an error by the pitcher. This brought up Caitlyn Sung, who ripped a single to center field to load the bases. Next batter Hailey Reed walked to plate Estrada and tie things up 1-1 and force extras.

In the eighth inning Sellers walked to lead things off and Gustafson moved her into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. This brought up Reynolds, who hit the second pitch she saw over the right field fence for the walk-off and the 3-1 victory.

The Tigers will look to sweep the visiting Lions tomorrow as the series concludes at noon.
