Box Score MORAGA, Calif. - Danny Mayer went 2-for-3 while Cooper Casad tossed eight innings, but Saint Mary's posted a 5-1 win over the Pacific baseball team Saturday at Luis Guisto Field.
Saint Mary's scattered five hits and allowed no earned runs to take the second game of the three-game set. Jimmy Boras and Ryan Schalch added doubles for the Tigers.
The Gaels picked up a 1-0 lead in the second, unearned, on a sacrifice fly following a lead-off error.
The Tigers answered with a run to tie in the fifth, as Blake Barry was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Preston Moebius reached on a throwing error, which allowed Barry to trot home.
But in the sixth, Zach Kirtley opened with a single and Kevin Milam homered to left for a 3-1 Gaels lead.
Boras doubled in the seventh and Matthew Tarantino reached on an error, but the Tigers stranded the two runners on base as Ken Waldichuk got out of the inning unscathed.
Saint Mary's tacked on two more in the eighth as Edward Haus walked, and Jackson Thoreson homered to right field.
SMC starter Connor Loeprich (5-1) allowed four of the Tiger hits in six innings, and struck out three to get the win. Waldichuck tossed two innings of one-hit ball, while Milam retired the side in order in the ninth.
Casad took the loss, to fall to 1-2, with three strikeouts in his eight innings. Four of the runs were earned.
Game three of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
