LOS ANGELES - Blake Barry and Lucas Halstad homered for the Tigers, but Pacific's five-run ninth-inning rally fell short at Loyola Marymount Friday as the Lions took game one of a three-game set, 8-7.

The Tigers scored five runs in the ninth, but a four-run second inning and three-run fifth by LMU were enough to hold up as LMU starter Blake Redman tossed 8.1 innings for the win.

Barry finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Danny Mayer and Preston Moebius each finished 2-for-4.

Barry hit a lead-off home run to open the game, as hit the second pitch of the ballgame over the wall in left for a 1-0 Pacific lead and his second homer of the season.

But the Lions answered with four in the second as Jamey Smart delivered a two-run double following a hit by pitch and a single, and after a walk, Nick Sogard added an RBI double to right before the fourth run came in on a sacrifice fly from Phil Caulfield.

The Tigers picked up a run in the fourth to pull within 4-2 as Halstead drilled an 0-2 pitch to left center for a solo home run, his firth of the season.

Loyola Marymount tacked on three in the fifth, as Sogard singled and stole second and after a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly, runs came home on a wild pitch and a throwing error as the Tigers trailed 7-2 after five.

Jordon Gonzalez tossed two innings of one-hit shutout ball, retiring six of seven. Ed O'Bannon III tossed the eighth, striking out the first two before a trio of walks and an infield single from Caulfield plated the eighth LMU run.

Redman had scattered six hits through eight innings, but the Tigers led off the ninth with singles from Danny Mayer and James Free II. Ryan Schalch drove in Mayer with an RBI grounder and was safe on an error. Moebius singled through the left side to load the bases and chase Redman.

Ted Boeke entered for LMU and walked pinch hitter Matt Tarantino and Jimmy Boras, putting the tying run on base with one out. Braydon Salzman replaced Boeke, and Barry reached on an RBI fielder's choice to pull within two, 8-6, with Barry representing the tying run on first base. Pinch runner Kobi Allen scored on a wild pitch, with Barry advancing to second with two away. But after a nine-pitch battle, Kevin Sandri took a called third strike to end the rally.

Redman improves to 3-4 on the year as he struck out four in the contest. Ryan Shreve allowed six earned in 4.2 innings, on four hits and four walks to fall to 1-2. Salzman was credited with his first save.

Pacific falls to 11-13 on the year, 2-5 in West Coast Conference play, while LMU improves to 16-10 and 5-2 in the WCC.

The Lions and Tigers are back it on Saturday in game two of the series at 6 p.m.
