Box Score FRESNO, Calif. - The Tiger softball team fell 5-4 to the Fresno State on Wednesday night despite out-hitting the hosts in the contest. Hailey Reed got her eighth start of the season, going two-and-a-third with five earned. In relief, Marissa Young tossed three and two-thirds, striking out three and giving up no earned. Rachel Sellers hit her sixth home run of the year, extending her hit streak to eight games which ties a career-high. The setback drops the Tigers to 17-19 on the season while the victory brings the Bulldogs to 23-11.
With one out in the first Hailey Reed lined a single to left field and Molly Bourne followed with a walk, her team-leading 18th of the year. Next batter Sydney Lahners ripped a double to left-center to score Reed and put the Tigers up 1-0. Cassidy Gustafson followed with a double of her own to clear the bases and make it 3-0.
The Bulldogs put two on with just one out in the bottom half of the inning and a sac fly was able to advance the runners to second and third with two down. Next batter Mchellon tied the score at 3-3 with a home run to left field, which was the first home run given up by Reed all season.
Castellon led off the second for Fresno State with a hit by pitch and Rohleder followed with a walk. A sac bunt advanced the runners to second and third with just one out, giving the Bulldogs a chance to take the lead. Next batter Rivers lined one that looked to be going up the middle, but shortstop Bourne was able to glove it out of the air and immediately step on second for the double play to get the Tigers out of the inning.
Fresno State took the lead in the third as a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded forced in a run and make it 4-3, and a fly out to center field plated another extending the Bulldog lead to 5-3.
With one out in the fifth Rachel Sellers knocked her sixth home run of the season to left field, bringing the score to 5-4 and extending her hitting streak to eight games, which ties her career-high. In the bottom half the Bulldogs put two one with two out, but Marissa Young got Rohleder looking to end the inning, one of her three strikeouts of the night.
The Tigers put runners on in the sixth inning but couldn't find a way to bring them around, resulting in the loss.
Pacific will kick off conference play on April 8th and 9th as they head down to Southern California to face San Diego. The Tigers will then cap off the road trip against BYU before heading home for a three-game series against Loyola Marymount.
