Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers used two big innings to get the victory Tuesday, scoring six in the second and six in the eighth to win 12-10 over San Jose State. Danny Mayer drove in four runs in the game while six Tigers enjoyed multi-hit days. Pacific moves to 9-10 on the season with the win.
The Tigers entered the eighth down four runs but promptly put eight consecutive batters on base, taking their first lead of the game. The scoring started with a pinch-hit RBI single from Jimmy Boras, who would score the tying run later that inning on a Matt Tarantino single to left. Pacific took the lead on a balk, then added an insurance run when James Free II knocked the ball up the middle, allowing Tarantino to waltz home from third.
Vince Arobio picked up his second win of the year after pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Ryan Schalch had his first career save, striking out two in the ninth as well as going 2-for-3 with two runs in the game.
Pacific also scored six runs in the second inning, starting that rally with Schalch doubling to center. Preston Moebius knocked a single down the rightfield line that took a fortuitous bounce away from the first baseman, allowing Schalch to score.
The tough bounces continued to benefit the Tigers when Mayer knocked a searing grounder that leaped high over the shortstop's head, ending up as a two-run double that kept the rally going. Tarantino, Free, and Halstead would also drive in runs in the inning.
San Jose State scored six runs in the first inning, then took their lead with two runs in the third and two more in the seventh, but couldn't maintain it in the face of the Tiger offense. The Spartans gave up the six runs in the eighth over just one-third of an inning, dooming them to the loss.
