SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers were unable to get the series win in their first weekend of the 2017 season, losing 11-0 in the rubber match to the San Diego State Aztecs. Pacific is now 1-2 on the young season.
Ricky Reynoso got the start but was replaced by Cooper Casad in the second inning. Reynoso would take the loss, his first of the year. Pacific used six relief pitchers who combined to allow four earned runs in 6.2 innings.
Dominic Purpura picked up his first win of 2017 after going 4-2 with a 3.25 ERA for San Diego State last season. He allowed just three hits in his six innings of work.
San Diego State struck first with an RBI groundout. A walk and a single put men on in the first, with a fielding error putting the lead runner on third with no outs. That allowed the Aztecs to get the game's first run. Reynoso worked around the jam well, ending the inning shortly thereafter with a pickoff.
The Aztecs added to their lead with an RBI double in the second inning to make it 2-0. A balk and a single gave San Diego State another run. Reynoso was chased from the game after the bases were loaded with just one out. All three of those runners would come around to score as San Diego State scored five runs in the inning.
After a fielding error made it 7-0 in the third, the Aztecs added three more runs on a homerun in the fourth on a shot over the leftfield wall. San Diego State would end the game with 11 runs after putting up another in the bottom of the eighth.
