Young Tosses Shutout as Tigers Blank Hornets, 4-0

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Softball team registered a 4-0 shutout victory over Sacramento State on Tuesday Afternoon, aided by a second-straight shutout performance from sophomore pitcher Marissa Young (8-5), the reigning West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week. Young tossed seven innings, allowing six hits, walking none and falling one short of her career high with six strikeouts.

Pacific struck first in the top of the second inning as Sydney Lahners drew a walk with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error by Hornet starter Savanna Corr (2-2) that allowed Melanie Habib to reach safely. With two down, a wild pitch advanced the pair into scoring position for Sara Anderson, who singled into right field, chopping one over the head of the infield and giving Pacific a 2-0 lead with two unearned runs. Anderson stole second, putting herself in scoring position for Haylee Moran-Rowen, who promptly delivered a single to right, plating Anderson for a 3-0 Tiger advantage.

Young tossed a 1-2-3 frame in the bottom of the second and followed it up with another perfect inning in the third inning. In the fourth inning, Sasha Marguiles reached on an infield single to leadoff the frame, but Pacific recovered, with Young setting down the remainder of the Hornet hitters in order.

In the bottom of the fifth, the first extra hit of the game came off the bat of Kortney Solis, as the catcher doubled down the left field line with one out. Sydney Rasmussen reached on a Habib fielding error with two down, extending the inning, but Young induced a groundout off the bat of Zamari Hinton to end the threat.

The Hornets also put a runner in scoring position in the sixth, as Marguiles reached on another infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but again, Young was unfazed, using a strikeout, a line out and a grounder to end any thought of a Sacramento State rally. Pacific struck for an insurance run in the seventh after Anderson singled through the right side and after a fielders choice, Haylee Moran-Rowen took second, tagging up on a foul fly out by Nicole Zapotoczny. Rachel Sellers, the reigning WCC Player of the Week, powered one into right center field, picking up an RBI that plated the fourth run of the game.

Sacramento State continued to fight, as Solis again doubled in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but Young induced a comebacker off the bat of pinch hitter Alexxiss Diaz and got Rasmussen to ground out, ending the ballgame and sealing a third straight win and a second straight shutout for the Orange and Black.

Anderson and Moran-Rowen both had two hits at the top of the Tiger order, with Lahners walking twice.

Margulies had a three-hit day for Sacramento State, while Solis added the pair of doubles. Corr allowed just one earned run over her seven frames, walking four and striking out four.

Pacific will return to action tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. at Stanford's Smith Family Stadium. Pacific will take on the Cardinal for the first time in 2016. Live Stats for the contest will be available via PacificTigers.com and fans are encouraged to check the schedule page for information.
