Power Display Not Enough As Tigers Drop Doubleheader To San Diego

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Softball team dropped a West Coast Conference doubleheader at Bill Simoni Field on Saturday, falling twice to San Diego, 3-0 and 8-6, despite homers from Nicole Zapotoczny and Haylee Moran-Rowen in the second game of the day. Pacific falls to 19-21 on the year (2-6 WCC) while San Diego sits at 18-26 after drawing its conference record even at 4-4 on the season.

Game One

In the first of two on the day, Pacific was shut down by USD hurler Megan Sabbatini (11-15). Sabbatini faced just one over the minimum on the day, retiring the last 20 Tigers she faced. Sabbatini finished with nine strikeouts over her seven innings of work. Melanie Habib's one-out double in the first inning was the only baserunner for the Tigers.

The difference maker in the contest proved to be Torero runs in the fourth and fifth innings. A Lauren Berriatua single in the fourth plated the game's first run and Mary Grabowski punched a two-out two-RBI single past Sydney Lahners at first base to extend the Toreros lead to 3-0, which would prove to be the final score of the contest.

Marissa Young largely matched Sabbatini in the effort, going seven strong, allowing eight hits and three runs, walking three and striking out two in a complete game defeat.

Game Two

The second game of the day was a drama-filled, see-saw battle of a contest that has become customary in the West Coast Conference. Pacific sent Cassidy Gustafson to the circle against Sabbatini, who was utilized for the second straight contest after needing just 61 pitches in the first game.

After Gustafson retired San Diego in order in the first, The Tigers instantly showed that game two would not be easy for the Torero pitcher. Sara Anderson singled to lead off the inning and after a sacrifice bunt from Melanie Habib, Rachel Sellers roped a two-out single to right field to give Pacific the 1-0 advantage. After a quick inning from Gustafson in the circle, Nicole Zapotoczny homered to left field to open up the second, giving Pacific a 2-0 advantage. With that blast, Nicole Zapotoczny tied Cindy Ball for 6th place all-time on Pacific's career homers list.

Gustafson got into her first spot of trouble in the fourth inning. Kailey Hill reached on an infield single and Lauren Kane walked to put two runners on with no out. With one out, Mary Grabowski singled to center and Hill scored on a fielding error by Anderson to cut the advantage for Pacific in half. Danielle Mavridis then singled to tie the score at 2-2. Megan Walters (3-4) took over in the circle for Gustafson and got two quick outs on ground balls to end the inning.

Pacific retook the lead in the fourth inning. Sydney Lahners doubled to right center and with two out, Gustafson reached on a fielding error by Tatum Schultz that scored Lahners for a 3-2 Pacific lead. In the top of the fifth, San Diego struck for three against Walters to take a 5-3 lead. An RBI single from Lauren Kane and a 2-RBI double from Schultz capitalized the inning for the visitors. San Diego added three unearned runs in the sixth inning, with Hill's double down the right field line and Kane's infield single doing the majority of the damage for an 8-3 lead.

Pacific was not done yet, clawing back for three in the bottom of the sixth. Rachel Sellers doubled down the left field line with one out before Mary Hernandez spelled Sabbatini in the circle. Zapotoczny walked ahead of Cassidy Gustafson, who flew out for the second out of the inning. Haylee Moran-Rowen, hitting down in the order from her usual second spot, launched her first home run as a Tiger with two out, a three-run blast that put Pacific right back into the contest at 8-6.

Kenya Lindstrom took over for Walters in the circle to begin the seventh inning, and allowed a run on four Torero hits, giving the visitors a 9-6 lead. Hernandez then retired Pacific in order in the seventh to seal a doubleheader sweep for San Diego.

Anderson, Lahners and Sellers each had multi-hit contests while Moran-Rowen had three RBI to tie a career high. For San Diego, six different hitters had multi-hit contests, with Danielle Mavridis leading all players with three hits. Kane and Schultz both had multi-RBI contests.

Pacific will look to salvage the third game of the three-game series, a 12:00 p.m. Sunday Matinee at Bill Simoni Field. Tickets are available via PacificTigers.com and fans are encouraged to visit PacificTigers.com for the latest live video and stats.
