Box Score Moraga, Calif. - In the rubber match of a three game conference set, the Saint Mary's Gaels used a late run in the bottom of the sixth inning to sink the Pacific Softball team by a final score of 3-2. Pacific fell behind in the bottom of the first, 1-0, but rallied back to take a 2-1 lead before faltering in the late innings. Pacific is now 19-18 on the season (2-4 WCC) while Saint Mary's improves to 18-20-1 (5-1 WCC) on the season.
Pacific sent freshman hurler Kenya Lindstrom (4-6) to the circle against Lujane Mussadi (7-9) of the Gaels, who was making her second consecutive start after a 1-0 victory on Saturday night.
Saint Mary's struck first with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, as Andrea Hazel homered to left, a solo shot that gave the hosts an early 1-0 advantage. The Tigers wasted no time getting to Mussadi in the top of the second as Sydney Lahners doubled to left field to open the frame and Nicole Zapotoczny reached on a bunt single with no out. After Molly Bourne walked to load the bases with one out, Melanie Habib delivered a single through the left side of the infield to tie the contest. The next hitter, Taylor Brink, singled to center, plating Zapotoczny for a 2-1 lead to the visitors. Mussadi recovered, inducing a pair of groundouts to keep Bourne at third base.
The Tigers had a chance in the top of the third, as Lahners singled with one out and Gustafson doubled to left field with two down, but Mussadi bested Bourne, getting the sophomore to fly out to end the threat.
Lindstrom kept the Gaels at bay in the second and third before getting into a spot of trouble in the bottom of the fourth frame. Lollie Fitzpatrick single dup the middle with one out and Erica Musgrave followed with a single to left. With two down, Shannon Low reached on an error by Sara Anderson, allowing Musgrave to score unearned to tie the contest.
Lahners continued her scorching weekend in the top of the fifth, with a two-out double, but Zapotoczny was retired on a groundout, stranding pinch runner Christin Stein in scoring position.
With two outs in the Tiger side of the sixth, Habib reached on an error by the shortstop and Brink doubled into left field. Habib rounded third attempting to score, but was thrown out at home, allowing the Gaels to preserve the tie. In the bottom of the sixth. Three straight two-out singles, by Haley Sparacino, Low and Bailey Lotz plated the ultimate winning run for the Gaels at 3-2.
Mussadi retired the Tigers 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to seal her second consecutive complete game victory. Mussadi did not record a strikeout, but effectively scattered eight hits over her seven frames of work to boost the hosts to the series win. Low was the only Gaels player with a multi-hit game.
Lindstrom threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs on eight hits, striking out two while walking none. Lahners went 3-3 with two doubles and Brink added two hits, including a double.
Pacific returns to action on Wednesday, hosting the No. 23/25Fresno State Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. at Bill Simoni Field. The non-conference test with valley rivals serves as a precursor to a conference home series with San Diego beginning Saturday.
