Stockton, Calif. - The No. 56 Pacific men's tennis team opened the brand new Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center Sunday against Utah State, but the Aggies spoiled the festivities with a 6-1 win.
Miguel Diaz posted a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) win at second singles, but Jaime Barajas topped Sem Verbeek 7-5, 6-0, at first singles. The result was just the second singles loss of the year for Verbeek (9-2).
Jack Swindells outlasted Jose Chamba, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (8) at their singles, while Alex Giannini fell 7-6, 6-4, to Luis Lopez at fourth singles.
Samuel Serrano topped Bernardo Oliveira, 6-3, 6-4, while Romai Ugarte took a 6-4, 6-4, decision over Lance Ngo.
In doubles, Swindells and Maier won 6-3 over Diaz and Giannini, 6-3, at the second position while Oliveira and Ngo fell 6-3 to Andrew Nakajima and Jaime Barajas.
The No. 40 pair of Sem Verbeek and Jose Chamba went unfinished against Lopez and Ugarte.
Pacific falls to 6-6 overall on the season, while Utah State improves to 10-4 overall.
The matches were the first on the Tigers new 12-court Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center surface, which will host the remaining Pacific matches this season.
"It was great to play at home and be on the new facility," head coach Ryan Redondo said. "Unfortunately we didn't get the victory for the first time out but this is a world class facility to play on and watch matches. We are so grateful to all the donors that made this possible."
The Tigers are back in action at the Pacific Mountain Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. Friday through Sunday.
