Box Score Stockton, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers eventually triumphed 4-3 against Northern Colorado in a game that began Friday but finished Saturday afternoon after severe weather conditions. The game started at 2:00 on Friday but didn't finish until 3:00 pm Saturday. The win was the third of the year for Pacific and the first career win for Fineas Del Bonta-Smith. Northern Colorado drops to 2-8 on the season.
Will Lydon was on the mound for the Tigers in his third start of the year. After giving up two runs in the first, Lydon shutout Northern Colorado for three innings and appeared to be hitting his groove. Lydon would end up going four before the rain delay suspended the game. Lydon was replaced by Del Bonta-Smith when the game resumed Saturday. The freshman went 2.2 innings, allowing just three baserunners en route to the win.
Connor Leedholm started but was ran from the game after less than an inning as the Tigers put up four runs in the first inning. Northern Colorado would go on to use six different pitchers in the game as Pacific ended up with 11 hits. Leedholm would take the loss to drop to 0-3.
Northern Colorado scored two in the first to take the lead. The Bears put men on first and second with one out. A double followed to score one. Kevin Sandri made a fine play to get the second out but the grounder was deep enough to make it 2-0 Northern Colorado.
The Tigers offense took little time tying it up before taking the lead for themselves. Sandri and Nate Verlin singled to start the inning, with Sandri's single smoked up the middle and Verlin's flying past a diving second baseman.
Danny Mayer followed with his seventh extra-base hit, a double into the leftfield corner that scored one. Gio Brusa singled to score another run. A double play followed that made it 3-2, as Mayer had taken third on Brusa's single.
Louis Mejia singled to center after that but his time on the basepaths was brief. J.J. Wagner powered the ball to deep centerfield over the centerfielder's head and down to the wall on one bounce. Wagner slid into third with an RBI triple, giving him six RBI this season. Five of those RBI have come in the last five games for Wagner as well.
The four-run first inning was tied for the highest-scoring inning of the year for Pacific and was the highest-scoring first inning for the Tigers. The last time Pacific scored that many runs in the first inning was March 27, 2015.
All but one run in the game came in the first inning as the relief staff for each team did their jobs. The Tigers two relievers, Del Bonta-Smith and Jake Jenkins, allowed just two hits in their five innings of work. Only two baserunners advanced past first base against the Pacific relief staff.
The bottom of the order for the Tigers continued their season-long contributions. J.P. Yakel walked for the second time in the fourth inning, followed by a single by Jimmy Boras making it second and third with one out after Boras took second on the throw. The two combined to reach base five times, with Yakel walking twice and getting hit by a pitch and Boras walking and singling.
After suspending the game for 22 hours, the Tigers and Bears picked things back up on Saturday. Lucas Halstead made two diving grabs in the fifth to show off his glove with strong winds blowing the ball erratically. Halstead also walked in the seventh to help the team offensively.
Mayer singled in the seventh. The junior stole second one pitch later for his first career stolen base in only his second attempt, both of which have come this season.
Cole Maltese of Northern Colorado homered in the eighth to cut the Pacific lead to one run. It was the fourth hit in four at-bats for Maltese, who scored or drove in all three of Northern Colorado's runs. The homer was the first allowed this season by Jenkins, who had given up just four extra-base hits in his two appearances before today. The Tigers as a whole have only allowed four homeruns in their ten games.
Jenkins ended up with the save, pitching 2.1 innings. It was the first career save for Jenkins, who had only come on in relief 14 times in his 49 games.
Next on the docket for the Tigers will be two games against Northern Colorado tomorrow, with game one starting at 10:00 am. Game two will start 30 minutes following game one's conclusion. The game time is subject to change due to weather.
