Young Notches Career Best Strikeout Total, Tigers Edged 2-1

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - In the opening game of the Aggie Spring Swing Invitational, Pacific (14-12) was defeated by Dartmouth (9-8) by a final tally of 2-1. Pacific dropped the contest despite a career high seven strikeouts by Marissa Young (6-5) and a seventh-inning rally that saw the tying run called out on the base paths.

Dartmouth starter Breanna Ethridge (2-3) set Pacific down in order in the first frame before Katie McEachern led off the contest with a single to right field against Young (6-5). Lourlin Lara then reached on an infield single and Miranda Greig walked to load the bases with no out. McEachern and Lara were each forced out at home on a fielder's choice for the first two outs of the inning, but Tiffany Dyson singled home a pair with two down to give Dartmouth their only two runs of the contest.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard as Haylee Moran-Rowen roped her third double in two games, down the left field line and Nicole Zapotoczny reached on an infield single to pitcher. On the play, Moran-Rowen scored as the first baseman Maddie Damore was unable to keep a throw attempt in her glove. Pacific cut the Big Green advantage to just 2-1 but Ethridge struck out Sydney Lahners and induced fly outs from Rachel Sellers and Cassidy Gustafson to end the inning with the lead.

Moran-Rowen added a bunt single in the sixth, but Pacific had its best chance in the seventh. After Sellers struck out swinging for the first out of the inning, Gustafson singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Molly Bourne stepped up and chopped a grounder to shortstop on a 1-2 count. The play went to first base, and after the out Damore threw over to third where Gustafson appeared to be safe but was called out after sliding off the bag, ending the contest in favor of Dartmouth.

Young was a large part of the story of the game for the Tigers, striking out a career-high seven, eclipsing her previous best set against Sacramento State at the Louisville Slugger Invitational on March 12th. The sophomore allowed just three hits in a 94 pitch performance, surrendering just two walks and pitching five straight scoreless frames after the pair of first inning runs were surrendered.

Moran-Rowen was the only player with multiple hits in the game, which finished in a tidy 1:32. Dartmouth's Morgan McCalmon came on in relief of Ethridge to start the sixth, pitching two scoreless frames to pick up the save.

Pacific returns to action with a pair of match-ups tomorrow, taking on Dartmouth (11:00 a.m.) and host UC Davis (3:30 p.m.). Live stats for both contests will be available via PacificTigers.com and UC Davis will produce an audio broadcast of Pacific's contest with the Aggies.
