Box Score Stockton, Calif. - In the finale of a seven-game homestand, the Pacific softball team used an all-around effort to dispatch visiting Iona, 5-1. Pacific was led offensively by Haylee Moran-Rowen, who finished 3-4 with a pair of doubles, and Cassidy Gustafson, who powered a home run off the scoreboard in left field. In the circle, Kenya Lindstrom pitched a four-hit complete game to improve to 4-3 on the season. Pacific is now 14-11 on the season with the victory, while Iona falls to 5-11.
Iona struck in the top of the first, as Ashyln Morris led off the contest with an infield single. With two out, Kristen Turner walked to put runners on the corners. Katie Newton then stepped up and singled to center field, plating Morris for the opening run of the contest and a 1-0 Iona advantage. Lindstrom recovered to strike out Kelsey Long to end the inning.
Pacific struggled early against Jessica Harkness (2-3). Harkness shut the Tigers down in the bottom of the first despite an infield single by Sara Anderson to open the inning, and the two pitchers matched each other with scoreless innings in the second. After Lindstrom made quick work of the Gaels in the top of the third, Pacific took the lead in the bottom of the frame.
Taylor Brink started the threat with a single to left field and advanced to second on a groundout from Sara Anderson. Moran-Rowen then stepped up and singled into right field, advancing to third on an error by the right fielder Courtney Miller, plating Brink to tie the score. The next batter, Nicole Zapotoczny, doubled to left, scoring Moran-Rowen for a 2-1 lead. Sydney Lahners followed with a walk, but after sacrifice bunt off the bat of Rachel Sellers, Gustafson struck out to end the rally.
Lindstrom's fourth frame saw two two-out walks, but the freshman struck out Kimberly Chiapparelli to end the inning and record yet another scoreless frame. The Tigers added another run with a three-hit in the bottom of the fourth. Melanie Habib singled to right field with one-out and Anderson reached on an infield single with two down. After a pitching change brought designated player Christine Costello into the contest to pitch, Moran-Rowen roped a double, plating Anderson and advancing Brink for a 3-1 lead.
Iona had a chance to get right back into it in the top of the fifth, as Miller doubled down the right field line with one out and Costello reached on a Zapotoczny error. Unfazed, Lindstrom induces groundouts from Turner and Newton to end the inning, sending Pacific to the bat racks with a chance to add some runs to the scoreline.
Sellers was hit by an errant pitch to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning and the next hitter Gustafson launched a laser of a home run to left field, off the scoreboard, plating pinch-runner Christin Stein for a 5-1 advantage to the hosts that would serve as the final tally.
Moran-Rowen doubled yet again in the bottom of the sixth, ahead of a Zapotoczny single that put two in scoring position, but Costello induced a pop-up off the bat of Lahners to end the threat.
Lindstrom struck out one in the sixth and one in the seventh to finish with five strikeouts against five walks in a complete-game, four-hit effort, her second straight complete game after shutting out Colgate on Wednesday. The top of the order did damage for the Orange and Black, with Anderson, Moran-Rowen and Zapotoczny all recording multi-hit games in the contest.
Pacific will return to action on Friday at 1:15 pm in Davis, Calif, as the Aggie Spring Swing Tournament gets underway with the Tigers taking on Dartmouth.
