Tigers Offense Overpowers BYU In 10-8 Win

Box Score

Provo, Utah – The Pacific Tigers put up a season-high in runs as they ran over the BYU Cougars in the series finale, snapping BYU's 12-game winning streak with a 10-8 win.  The last time Pacific scored at least ten runs was also against BYU in a 11-6 win on May 1, 2015.  The win was Pacific's first in WCC play this year and their second road win.  The Tigers never trailed in the game, handing BYU their first home loss.  Pacific is now 7-12 overall and 1-2 in the WCC.

After putting up quality starts in all three of his previous starts as well as picking up his first career save in a relief appearance, Jake Jenkins once again looked strong.  Jenkins struck out the first batter of the game and only improved from there, retiring eight of the first nine batters.  Pacific's ERA leader didn't allow a hit until two outs in the third.

Jenkins left after six innings and has given up just four earned runs in his last 14 innings of work.  He struck out three on the day.  The win went to Fineas Del Bonta-Smith, who pitched a scoreless seventh and gave up two in the eighth.  Del Bonta-Smith is now 2-1 on the year.

Bryce Lombardi came in and locked up his second career save with a scoreless ninth inning.  Lombardi walked the first man he faced but forced a double play after that by knocking down a liner to allow Kevin Sandri to get to the ball in time.

The Tigers chased BYU starter Hayden Rogers in the second inning as the offense burst to life with five runs.  The loss would go to Mason Marshall, who allowed a two-run homer in the ninth and goes to 1-1 on the season.

Gio Brusa single to start the second with a sharp grounder over second base.  Brusa has now reached base via hit or walk in six straight games.  The senior also recorded his first stolen base of the year in the inning.  Pacific is now 14-18 on the year in stolen base attempts.

Nate Verlin singled to left after that but the ball was too shallow to score Brusa, who took third.  That ended up not mattering one bit thanks to Lucas Halstead's deep double to the rightfield wall.  Halstead drove in Brusa for his fourth RBI in the last seven games as well as his second double in the last four.  After going 1-for-12 against Washington, Halstead hit .333 with two walks against BYU.

The lead became two runs when J.P. Yakel ripped a shot at the third baseman that was too hot to handle.  The infield single moved everyone up a base, leaving the bases loaded for Kevin Sandri

Sandri's sixth HBP of the year made it 3-0.  Sandri leads the team in HBPs and is third in the conference.  It was also Sandri's ninth RBI, six of which have come in the last nine games, all while batting leadoff.

After homering last night, Danny Mayer added to his team-leading RBI total with a two-run single with the bases loaded in the second.  Mayer didn't get all of the ball but was able to drop it right between the fielders in short right as two came across, giving Mayer 16 RBI on the year.

The five-run second was the highest-scoring inning of the year for the Tigers.  They had previously scored four in an inning on four separate occasions.

Blake Barry made his first start in center and picked up his first career hit for the Tigers as well.  Barry laid down a bunt in the fourth that came to a complete stop in no-man's land right between the charging third baseman and the pitcher.  The junior also walked and showed off outstanding range in centerfield with a number of great running catches throughout the game.

The only dangerous offensive rally BYU was able to manage against Jenkins came in the fifth inning.  The Cougars scored two unearned runs after a throwing error put men on the corners, followed by two straight RBI singles.

J.J. Wagner blasted a no-question homerun to stretch the lead for Pacific to start the sixth.  Wagner's homer was gone immediately off the bat, flying over the leftfield wall as the outfielder watched it go.  It was Wagner's second homer of the year and fourth of his career.  He now has a five-game hitting streak, hitting .370 with eight runs over the last six games.

BYU cut into the lead with two in the sixth.  A bunt single put one on, then a double drove that runner in.  Jenkins did well to work around trouble but another run scored when a groundball was misplayed and BYU was able to reach safely, driving in another runner from third to make it 6-4.

J.P. Yakel added his second double of the series in the eighth, scoring two and making it 8-4.  Yakel had no extra-base hits and four RBI heading into the BYU series and left it with two doubles and four more RBI, driving in one on Thursday and three today.  Yakel hit .455 with two runs, four RBI, and two doubles in the series.  The three RBI today tied his career high, a total he previously reached against San Jose State this year.

Louis Mejia and Sandri combined for an impressive play in the eighth after one run had scored for BYU.  Mejia made a diving stop on a grounder up the middle then flipped the ball to Sandri at second to get the first out.  Sandri easily sidestepped the runner and threw it on to first to complete the double play.  An infield single followed to score another BYU run.

Unfortunately, a two-run homer followed the double play to tie the game at 8-8.

Mejia started the ninth with a single as the senior has now reached base safely in 17 of Pacific's 19 games.

Mayer made sure that the tie was short-lived by absolutely crushing the ball over the leftfield fence to make it 10-8.  It was Mayer's second homer in as many games and gave Mayer a share of the WCC lead with five homers on the season.  It also gave Mayer four RBI on the day, tying his career high set earlier this year against Northern Colorado.

Pacific returns home for one game against the Nevada Wolf Pack on Tuesday at 6:30.  That game will feature dollar hot dogs as well as the Koozie Tuesday giveaway.  Tickets are available online.
