Box Score 2 Stockton, Calif. - In a midweek clash with the Towson Tigers, the Pacific softball team fell 9-1 in six innings to the east coast squad as five unearned runs hurt Pacific in a third inning rally for the visitors. Towson improves to 17-4 with the win while Pacific falls to .500 at 11-11 after 22 contests.
After Towson starter Blakley Thrower (4-0) and Pacific hurler Marissa Young (5-4) each tossed scoreless frames in the first inning. The Pacific offense supported the sophomore with a run in the second inning. After Haylee Moran-Rowen reached on an error to begin the inning, Melanie Habib chipped a single down the right field line. With two out, Sara Anderson reached on a fielding error by the second baseman Bailey Boyd, scoring Moran-Rowen for an early 1-0 advantage.
Pacific fell victim to errors on the top of the third as Boyd reached on a fielding error by Cassidy Gustafson to lead off the inning ahead of a double from Olivia Baltazar that put runners at second and third. After Kendyl Scott grounded out, Olivia Yarbrough reached on a fielding error by Nicole Zapotoczny, scoring Boyd to tie the score at 1-1. Daria Edwards then walked, setting the stage for Shelby Stracher, who powered a grand slam to right field, giving Towson a 5-1 advantage.
Thrower delivered a scoreless frame in the 3rd and Towson again loaded the bases in the fourth against Young, but this time Pacific was able to end the threat without allowing a run.
Moran-Rowen led off the fourth with an infield single, but Thrower again worked around the base runner. In the fifth, Stracher delivered another extra base hit, doubling to lead off the frame. Megan Walters spelled Young in the circle and stranded Stracher at second with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout, keeping Pacific within striking distance.
In the fifth, Molly Bourne was hit by an errant Thrower pitch and Sydney Lahners doubled to put two runners in scoring position for the Orange and Black. Thrower got Gustafson and Moran-Rowen out to end the threat.
In the sixth, Boyd singled up the middle with one out and Olivia Baltazar followed with an infield single. Scott then singled, scoring Boyd, to make the score 6-1 in favor of Towson. With two down, Stracher again stepped up in the clutch, singling down the right field line, picking up two RBI to make the score 8-1. Holiday Cahill then doubled to the right field wall, scoring Stracher, giving Towson a chance to end the game early.
Thrower recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth to send Towson to a road win in Stockton. The freshman finished with three strikeouts against four walks, surrendering three hits and no earned runs over her six frames. Young largely matched Thrower, allowing five runs, all unearned, over her four innings of work, walking one and striking out two.
Lahners double was Pacific's lone extra base hit in the contest. Stracher finished 3-4 with 6 RBI to lead the way for the visitors.
Pacific continues its homestand tomorrow as Colgate visits for a doubleheader, with games slated for 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm at Bill Simoni Field.
