Tigers Blank Bethune-Cookman 8-0 In Mary Nutter Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Cathedral City, Calif. - In the opening game of its stint at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, the Pacific Softball team (4-2) delivered with an 8-0, walk-off, run rule victory over Bethune-Cookman (3-3). Marissa Young (2-1) pitched six scoreless frames to pick up the win, the Tigers third shutout victory of the Young season.

After Young worked around a two-out single in a scoreless top of the first, the Tigers opened up scoring before an out was recorded in the bottom of the frame. Senior Sara Anderson led off with a walk and advanced to second on an illegal pitch ahead of an RBI single from sophomore Molly Bourne. Pacific loaded the bases in the frame, but pushed across just the one run.

Young allowed a two-out double to Kaitlin Alamprese in the second and Bethune-Cookman starter Deidra Genera (3-1) hurled a scoreless frame in the bottom of the inning, despite a leadoff error. Young swapped a scoreless inning with Genera in the top of the third, again working around a two-out knock, this time from Mariah Davis.

Pacific broke away in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Sophomore Rachel Sellers walked ahead of junior Cassidy Gustafson, who appeared to strike out swinging to end the inning, but reached on a passed ball, muffed third strike. Junior Haylee Moran-Rowen walked to load the bases, setting the stage for senior Melanie Habib. Habib tripled to right field, clearing the bases and picking up her first three RBI of the season, putting the Tigers up 4-0.

Young allowed two base runners in the top of the fourth, but again was able to get out of danger without surrendering a run. Pacific made it 5-0 in its half of the fifth after Anderson reached on a bunt and sophomore Sydney Lahners roped a double to center field.

Young allowed one runner in the fith and new pitcher Sabrina Anguiano shut Pacific down in the bottom of the inning. After Young went 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth, Pacific set the stage for the walk-off rally.

With one out, Anderson singled to shortstop ahead of a Bourne single to center field. Senior Nicole Zapotoczny singled to right, scoring Anderson and after Lahners grounded out, Sellers singled down the right field line, scoring Bourne and Zapcotoczny to seal the 8-0 advantage for the designated home team, resulting in a walk-off winner.

Pacific finished with three hitters posting multiple hits (Anderson, Bourne, Zapotoczny) with Habib and Sellers posting multiple RBI games.

Young struck out two over her six innings of work, surrendering just four hits on 88 pitches.

Pacific was slated to play Binghamton at 8:30 pm on Friday night, with the start pending the end of previous games of the tournament. Live Stats are available via PacificTigers.com/LiveStats and a paid subscription video service is available via FloSoftball.com for the remainder of the tournament.
