San Diego, Calif. - The No. 5 Pacific men's water polo team equaled the best defensive performance in program history with a 13-1 drubbing of No. 10 UC San Diego Saturday at the Triton Invite. Krisztian Laczkovics and Ben Stevenson each posted hat tricks. Derek Clappis also scored twice for the Tigers.
Brady Moore recorded eight saves in three quarters in the cage while Zach Paxton picked up a save in one quarter of work. Kale Ai, Casey Fleming, Alex Obert, Tim Reeves and J.T. Sarmento, also cracked the scoreboard for Pacific.
Fleming opened the scoring for Pacific and after Stevenson tallied his first, UC San Diego answered back with a goal from Andy Moore with :21 to go in the first quarter. But that was all the offense Moore and Paxton would give the Tritons, shutting out the No. 10 ranked team for the final 18:21.
Laczkovics scored twice in the second quarter as Pacific led 4-1 at the break, and a four-goal third put the Tigers in the driver's seat. Laczkovics completed the hat trick and Obert gave the Tigers a 6-1 lead before Stevenson capped his hat trick with goals in the final minute of the quarter.
Up 8-1, the Tigers used the whole travel squad, and Clappis responded with a pair of goals in 2:19 apart in the fourth. Ai, Sarmento and Reeves rounded out the scoring as the Tigers improved to 1-1 on the season.
Pacific's 13-1 win tied for the fewest goals allowed in program history, equaling a 14-1 win over No. 19 UC Davis in the 2002 NorCal Tournament. It's the Tigers' largest margin of victory over a top 10 opponent in program history.
Pacific is back in action on Sunday at 10:40 am when the Tigers face No. 17 Air Force in their third game of the Triton Invite. Pacific will meet No. 6 Long Beach State at 4 p.m. in the finale.
